I just built this PC:
AMD Threadripper 1950x - clocked it to 4.0 GHz immediately.
G.Skill Trident Z RGB - 64 GB (4x16 GB) 3200 MHz
Asus RoG Strix X399-E Gaming
Samsung Evo 960 500 GB m.2 solid state drive
Corsair h115i AIO cooler
Corsair 570x RGB case
Asus Strix GTX 1080 8GB (leftover from old build, I'd grab at least a 1080ti if I were purchasing new)
Seasonic 750w PSU
After seeing this thread, and in the interest of half-assed science, I just shot 10 seconds of every compression of 8K FF from 6:1 all the way to 22:1 to see what's possible with this machine. 24p of course.
REDCINE-X 50 with 32 simultaneous rendered frames and 40 GB of memory allotment:
Full res playback: None of my 8K FF test material at any compression ratio was possible. Though, I do have one 8K WS 10:1 clip from another shoot that is very very close to full res playback. It's a 50 second clip and it only caught up to the cache at about 45 seconds in.
1/2 res playback: 7:1 or higher
1/4 res playback: Everything (even that Monstro 8K 4:1 timelapse clip on red.com)
RESOLVE 14 STUDIO
Performance Mode ON - this mode supposedly switches the debayers automatically to try to ensure smooth playback.
8K DCI (I'm sure I'm making that term up, but it's 8192 x 4320 and not 8K UHD) Timeline
Full res premium: 6 fps playback or crashes Resolve.
1/2 res good: 8K FF 9:1 and above
1/4 res good: 8K FF 6:1 and above (lowest compression tested)
4K DCI Timeline
Full res premium: 8K FF 7:1 and above
1/2 res good: 8K FF 7:1 and above
1/4 res good: 8K FF 6:1 and above (lowest compression tested)
2K DCI Timeline
Full res premium: 8K FF 6:1 and above (lowest compression tested)
1/2 res good: same
1/4 res good: same
Performance Mode OFF
8K DCI Timeline
Full res premium: Crashes Resolve.
1/2 res good: 8K FF 9:1 and above
1/4 res good: 8K FF 6:1 and above (lowest compression tested)
4K DCI Timeline
Full res premium: None.
1/2 res good: 8K FF 7:1 and above
1/4 res good: 8K FF 6:1 and above (lowest compression tested)
2K DCI Timeline
Full res premium: None.
1/2 res good: 8K FF 7:1 and above
1/4 res good: 8K FF 6:1 and above (lowest compression tested)
PREMIERE PRO
8K Sequence
Full: Nope.
1/2: 8K FF 8:1 and above - playback still sketchy, pressing play too soon after changing playhead position can cause stuttering, but it smooths out in a couple seconds.
1/4: All flavors of 8K (6:1 lowest compression ratio tested) - much more reliable as far as scrubbing around with playhead
4K Sequence
Full: Mostly everything - a few dropped frames when resuming playback but overall steady
1/2: Everything (6:1 8K lowest compression tested)
1/4: Everything
2K Sequence
Full: Everything
1/2: Everything
1/4: Everything
Basically to summarize, even with this build, 1/2 res good or 1/4 res. Personally, 1/4 res looks smoother, cleaner, and more representative to the final 8K output image than 1/2 so I'm using that. 1/2 introduces a color shift in shadows which would be inaccurate to grade off of.
