If you're in Japan - paging Ivan - you can stop by the NHK Science and Technology expo happening in a few weeks and see the 8K HEVC encoder from NHK/Mitsubishi Electric as well as the latest 8K camera concepts from NHK in action. Hard to believe 8K is getting closer and closer to a reality when we've just started the run to 4K adoption.

8K is supposed to launch to the masses in 2020. And I'm betting RED will get us there before then. MX sensor has been around for what? 3.5 years, give or take? If Dragon does about the same, we could be staring at 8K plus with the following generation....

 We had 8k in remote Tasmania for quite some time, good to know Japan is slowly catching up. LOL

One of the 8K NHK camera prototypes looked like a normal Hitachi studio camera. It was WAY smaller then the giant computer gun they currently have. I was blown away by it actually. tried getting details on it but they wouldn't budge! All I found out is that it is indeed a CMOS sensor. Earth shattering I know ;-)

Hey man... I just noticed this.. haha...

yeh, I went there and it was really really interesting. NHK has a crazy amount of stuff happening beyond 8K alone. I will tell you here, 8K is not as much of a revolution as we would think. It DOES look insane, especially at 60p, but most folks in Japan have just bought their HD tv sets... and adoption of bluray is crazy low.

ALready consumers and TV stations (etc) are bitching that they dont wanna buy 4K TVs, let alone upgrade to 8K a few years after that.

That being said... it is nuts.

NHK R&D had this (8K) working back in 2006 for the record. I have seen it working with my own eyes back then during the KUROSAWA 4K restoration project, which I was in charge of. The detail was incredible even on a relatively small screen, but I remember thinking back then "this is one of those things that will never leave the R&D facility"...

heh heh heh
