  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

8K Camera weights just 2kg

I saw every years footage from the NHK sensor at IBC, and I have never been impress by it's imagery.
it actually looked too videoish to my eyes.
Sort of super betacam render look.
B.

How much Dynamic Range does it have? How much does the rest of it (recorder etc.) weigh? Is this like the prototype Frankie stage of the R-1?

My question is.. How much recorded data can be achieved without having to be tethered to an external recorder? I'd bet money that this "head" sends it's signal to a GIANT deck for recording. The ones I saw last year at NAB were a reasonable size for a deck, but wayyyy to big to cary around.

Quite an achievement. Hats off.

None. It's a camera head. With roughly 20 times more data output than 4K 24p.

That 8k camera and recorder should really be useful... for something.

Applications

- 4k contents server for your system promotion
- Medical operation live shooting and recording
- 4k resolution security video system for much clearer image than ever
- Geometric data capturing for academic, commercial, military, etc.
- 4k device R&D
- Cinema and broadcasting

But what will it cost?

i'm just sayin' will it be that much better than what we already have to justify what is (probably) a much greater expense. Not dissing the idea... I'll love it when it gets smaller and more portable. But I doubt it will ever be anything affordable for anyone other than big studios or Broadcast companies.

I'm just showing that 4K has got obsolete.

8K is in development.

I can't talk about IQ or so just because even 4K digital acquisition still didn't reach a value that I expected.

Film 65mm still beats digital 4K at almost every parameter of IQ.

If you for example can see Samsara and after that any of 4K recently acquired movies projected digital 4K at the same 4K theatre than maybe you should know what I'm talking about.

I know that. That's why I put "head" in parentheses. I guess I didn't word the question very well. My point is that the goal should be to have a portable system that is not just the head. In other words... Come up with an 8K camera that has on-board recording and is a similar size and NOW we're talking.

I agree that getting the head down, from the size it was 6 years ago, to what it is now is a HUGE step forward. ...but the head plus the deck plus the rack you have to put the deck in etc etc etc.... is too much bulk for most typical cinema applications.

Elsie gets it.

IMHO... 4K is not obsolete if you don't have something better that is a complete and relatively compact on-board system.

Again... just my opinion.

Actually 4K digital acquisition doesn't miss the physical resolution because it has enough pixels but it misses a full colour resolution.

There is no enough a sort of real colour pixels, existing fewer colour spreads over huge amount of by a "colour sense" empty resolution and the result is mostly always more or less a colour pale or bleak image.

Also the newest digital acquisition samples easy clip highlights that we can see clearly from Hobbit (Epic) to SkyFall (Alexa) as the most recent examples...

Re:CP lens poster

Apart from "looking pretty", it prettily underscores the need for lens manufacturers to harmonize as we head into new sensor size territory. Current medium format lenses are a bandaid solution at best. Is RED planning on supplying the optics for its future non-traditional sensor sizes; or is the lens conundrum likely to stay any desire to go beyond traditional cinema gauges? Will the likes of Canon hold the reins?

Like Sinatra said about love and marriage: you can't have one without the other.

It is not marketed as a "cinema camera". Point understood, though.

External recording deck is the least of problems for any cinema production seriously considering to shoot 8K 60P in near future.

How about you just have a small recorder box you strap to your belt or put in a backpack?

To me, having the recording / processing / compression chips (that generate a lot of heat) right next to your sensor (which gets noisier as heat increases) is not necessarily the best way to do things.

Aerial lenses might work. The Zeiss Topar 80mm f/2.0 for example is sharper than any s35/FF lens out there.

High end HD broadcast lenses have more MTF than any other glass but the image circle is too small and can cover rectangle by 1920x1080 only.

Do we know for sure this Astro system is NHK tech? The NHK system in the past, while the same resolution, used a smaller sensor.

As of right now, this camera and recorder look to better serve industrial applications. And there's nothing wrong with that at all -- it's actually a rather large market and one that is often ignored and misunderstood by most filmmaker types.

Larger sensors are inevitable for sure. Medium format glass selection in this world is terrible. I think I own every AF lens, plus a few others, that Mamiya makes. They're just OK. Optics are good, build quality is crap. There's Hassy glass and some other options out there, but as these camera companies move to larger sensors, someone will need to start making glass for them. Arri/Zeiss, Panavision, IMAX and a couple others do have cinema type lenses to cover 65/70mm formats, but they're expensive and not so easy to come by. The Panavision and IMAX flavors are rental only anyway...

Large apertures are not as important moving forward with large digital sensors. The increased focal lengths needed to maintain typical framing means that DOF is increasingly shallow. This can be offset by increased sensitivity of newer sensors and smaller aperture sizes, therefore keeping lens sizes a bit more manageable.
