Looking at a Canon EF 16-35mm f/2.8L II USM as a light weight alternative to our RPPs sometimes.

Is there a nice Vari ND that any of you guys would recommend? When I look at reviews I'm hearing a lot of NDs have serious vignetting at wide and some brands exhibit black streaks across frame when ND is set high.

If you can avoid Vari ND's do. All variable ND's, even the top brand (Heliopan) soften the image, have significant color shift, degrade bokeh and not to mention do nothing for IR contamination. Tiffen makes an IR Vari ND but it's IR protection isn't variable meaning it's too green cast at low levels of ND. For screw ons I use Tiffen White Water ND's 3 through 9 and White Water IR ND from 12 through 21. Very clean.

When i hear 16-35mm + VariND then i would recommend extensive testing and considering using a bigger Filter with step-up-adapter.

P.S.: Has anyone tested the Schneider (B+W) Vari-NDs?

Thanks everyone.

I'm VERY happy with my Tiffen Vari-ND. Been using it for years! Just look on the Contax Zeiss thread...posted countless frame grabs in bright sun rocking this thing. http://www.reduser.net/forum/showth...Zeiss-Survival-Guide/page226&highlight=contax
Great looking shots Chris. The vari - Tiffen I find on B&H is quite reasonably priced.

Maik, I was looking into step up adapters but could only see adapters that stepped up TO 82mm rather than fitted an 82mm and stepped up from there to a larger size. If you have a name of a product that does that it would be very helpful?

Yeah, going from 82mm to bigger is a bit rare, but there are a few:

I just tested a Tiffen Vari against Tiffen White Water ND's. The difference was enough to have me return it.
