800GB LTO-4 tape solution for the Mac, A review...

Talking about Sun/Storagetek,

A few weeks ago they released some SAS disk Arrays at killer prices..

Like a 16 disk array with 3 SAS connectors for under $AUD3000?

Hi Chocblu

What model number was that and where's it being resold at that price here in Australia?

Cheers,
Ben

Oh and It looks like its cheap because its JBOD.

Although it does come with ZFS..which means you can do all the RAIDz you want to and get pretty good speed...ZFS is very nice file system

HI guys, with regard to reasonably priced SAS JBOD disk arrays and you guys from australia.
THere are of course dozens of these on the web you can buy. If you live in australia these will be imported and of course have your notorious VAT sales tax I believe.

Some ideas for purchasing follow for these enclosures:

I have a PROAVIO EB8MS
HTML:
http://www.proavio.com/eb8ms.html
8 slot enclosure with 2 x SAS SFF-8088 (each addresses 4 x SAS targets). I have 8 x 1TB seagate SATA2 DDM's in it with an ATTO TECH EXPRESSSAS R380 HBA (
HTML:
http://www.attotech.com/expressSASh380.htm
l) dual port external RAID controller (MAC PRO). Go more with a SAS EXPANDER.

There are SAS external JOB boxes with only 4 bays.. these are cool too.

You may wanna order your stuff that's very reliable and cheaper than get it it locally including where to get a SAS Ultrium 4 tape drive .

JBOD Enclosures in Hong Kong:

Cyberlink Systems -
HTML:
http://www.nas.com.hk/stock_spec.htm#NS160S
- these are about $HK540 (see
HTML:
http://x-rates.com/calculator.html
for local exchange rates). They have 4 , 8 and 16 bay SAS JBOD enclosures for a brand from Taiwan.. these are good.

RevO IT (Thompson Road, Wan Chai (near MTR Exit A3) Hong Kong) -
HTML:
http://www.revoit.com.hk/prod_enh_e8.html#top
. THese guys have all the PROAVIO range (http://www.proavio.com). I bout the PROAVIO EB8MS for around $HK4000+. That's a great price.

SAS Tape drives: for importing from overseas, these guys at DIGITAPE
HTML:
http://www.digitape.com/
These guys take credit cards and paypal and are very reliable. 2 days to Hong Kong from usa with FedEX. My Quantum Ultrium LTO4 external tape drive shipped was around $USD2800+ I recall. Ultrium LTO4 Tape cartridges can be sourced locally as well around $USD60-70/each (800GB uncompressed)

SAS on the Mac

SAS on the Mac

Really great post guys!

I got a killer deal on an open box Quantum LTO-3 SAS. I was a bit naive in assuming that any SAS controller would work, wrong!
I have PMed a few people here who have made some great posts, but I wanted to open up the question to the rest of the forum.
Could I get some recommendations on what SAS controllers to use with the Quantum LTO-3 SAS on my MacPro?

Thanks!
-Brian

Has anyone successfully recovered media from an LTO tape using this setup?
Does this backup system work well with external firewire 800 drives?
I understand you went with the LSI SAS controller. I called LSI to confirm that their controller works with a Mac and they said it does not. I just wanted to confirm that you have had good results with the LSI SAS controller.

Thank you for your kind attention to my questions.

Yes.

I don't know, but I can say that it's hardly optimized for speed, so I don't think it would be a problem reading from slower FW800 systems. Even backing up from a 450+MB/s RAID, the Retrospect software is a dog. ATempo is better, but I seem to be having a few compatibility issues at times. I'm awaiting the new Retrospect X, which should be very close to release now. BRU's upcoming Producer's Edition looks great too and they should have support for this Quantum kit rolled into their next build, if not already.

LSI does not write OSX drivers themselves. However, Apple supports some LSI controller cards within OSX. The kitted version of the LTO-4HH with HBA includes the LSI SAS3442E card. It works fine in OSX and operates the LTO-4HH tape drive fine, provided the backup software has its own internal drivers for this combination.

My LTO 4 HH works with LSI card on Mac, However I've had a few drop-outs with the deck only on MAC OS X, But once taken over to windows the deck and Tapes work flawless under Norton.

LSI working fine here. The card Jeff mentioned is compatible per Retrospect...using a Quantum drive.

Retrospect's new version is due to ship mid December...so about 4 weeks away. I'm hoping it fixes a few issues I have when working in a SAN environment. Just talked with tech support Friday and they have made big changes that should help this...

BRian, I pretty sure the ATTO expresssas SAS HBA work ok with the Quantum LTO3 tape drives. The R380 (raid controller) works fine as do the H series. Suggest you email ATTO TECH support.

I am using an 8 core MACPRO at OSX 10.5.5

There is an outstanding issue with Quantum Ultrium LTO4 (that's FOUR or 4) and ATTOtech Express sas HBA cards. Simply Quantum have implemented some firmware that is clearly out of ULTRIUM spec. We're (customers and ATTO TEch) waiting for a fix from Quantum for this. A lot of people are affected with Quantum ULTRIUM LTO 4 tape drives and ATTO EXPRESSSAS HBAs. (All teh EXPRESSSAS HBA's are affected).

Note that the ATTO expresssas HBA's work just fine with HP Ultrium tape dirves. I am presently using my ATTO EXPRESSSAS R380 SAS HBA with an HP ULtrium LTO4 FULL HEight tape drive and Tolis Groups BRU-PE (BEta).

Works great!.

HI Kevin, I am very curious of the model of the LSI SAS HBA you are using for the QUantum Drive.

Retrspect on OSX?

Would you advise:
  1. is this a Quantum SAS Ultrium LTO 4 tape drive?
  2. are you using MAC OSX? if so what version?
  3. what are the LSI drivers for their HBA fo MAC OSX?

Please post back as I'm anxious to know.

Hi x86box, I'm curious to note the model of the SAS HBA from LSI you are using for the MAC OSX fo rthe LTO HH tape drive.

  1. what level of OSX are you using?
  2. what model of MAC PRO are you using?
  3. what SLOT do you have the LSI card in (x4 or x8 or x16)?
  4. what is the make and model of the LTO Ultrium tape drive?
  5. are you using Ultrium LTO4?
  6. what is the model of the LSI HBA your are using for the mac?

HP SAS ultrium 4's works just great but Quantum SAS Ultrium 4's are flaky with ATTOtech expresssas - see their open issue.

I'm curios is LSI will work.

Tolisgroup advised em that they have had NO success with Quantum HH LTO4 Ultrium (that's series 4) and LSI SAS HBAs on OSX to date.

Any help appreciated.

HP and Quantum SAS LTO4 tap drives and SAS HBA's on MACOSX

HI guys, for date tape archive and recall discussion, I have an ATTOTECH EXRESS SAS HBA (R380) and HP LTO4 and a Quantum LTO4 tape drive (2 tape drives) and Tolisgroup BRU-PE.

I just purchased an LSI LSI LOGIC LSI SAS3442E-R PCI-E SAS HBA and sucessfully tested with my quantum lto4 ultruim SAs tape drive on a MACPRO 10.5.5.
