  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

7d grabs

What is on Vimeo is downsized bigtime

The first sequence may be misfocuused, IMO the focus matches the resolution - you cant focus a low res camera

It is so soft I could not decide what was supposed to be sharp !

I have been testing some other 7d that are newer - will report back

The still is downsized to 1080 (BTW) also this is of course a crop, 2k or 4k would be better of course

My opinion, the EX1 is the minimum acceptable at 1080 and would rescue wit hsharpening, the lens is terrible, therefore causing a reject of the 7d

Glass on 7d, L series

Roll on

I think in part you are seeing the resolution limit of Canon's scaling and H.264 implementation. The typical color aliasing is very visible.

BTW I have the t1i which I like a lot for a lot of reasons given it is only $700 but it definitely has the color aliasing.

I dont care what I am seeing its just not good

I have owned two cameras hassy 22mp and kodak SLRn that had alaising issues but they only showed when the cameras were used for fabrics at the wrong frequency etc but used outside of that zone were the finest creators of digital still images on the planet - at that time

What we see here is a wooly ness that I find unacceptable

Well its not that easy, as a small doco style unit a red is too big, the next gen Scarlet may indeed be the answer

this could not be shot on RED.. http://vimeo.com/6995256 but was shot on 5d

Damn, I love the look of FF35...

You have to give the 5D props for that. As of right now, nothing else records at that size.

Just trying to figure out what it is that'll make you happy. Right now RED is really nice but it's a lot more money. Maybe the 5D is what you want. Just seems to me complaining about the 7D is a waste of time. There are other options out there. Buy one of those.

The EX1 looks great as video cameras go. If the 7D is even in the ballpark of that camera then I don't think there's much to complain about personally. In the downrezzed pics on your page the 7D looks comparable to the EX1. That's a $6k camera vs. a $2k still cam.

A lot of RED footage gets sharpening applied in post. When you look at a raw RED file it can feel soft.

Ironically the 5D footage of the war stuff is all somewhat soft. I'm sure a 7D could have delivered any of that.

I should have a GH1 to test against my 7D and my RED in a few days. I can get an EX1 too. Might be interesting. Although these tests really bore me any more. I just try to figure out what the best image I can get out of a unit is and decide if it's good enough for whatever I'm doing.

What will make me happy?

a decent small form factor larger chip 1080 camera, I dont need 4k

I posted this thread, to show that IMO, the 7d is not even serious at all at 1080

Now im thinking the camera is total cr ap

I never thought the 5d was cr ap - I thought it was a nice 1080 camera if you avoided certain situations and had a week to wait for compressor to get a frame rate sorted

Im on this board evaluating the best small form factor, large chip camera

Im not keen to spend $20k if I could get 80% of the quality for $4k - I cant justify that scale of ROI

But at the moment Im thinking this camera is just a dud

man.. that detail is.. aliasing just aliasing ehehehehe

sorry couldn't resist lol
good eye test & point buddy

Hi,

I can see aliasing becoming the new cool! not unlike 35mm adapters.

here is a quick 5d v 7d,

IMO the 5d is better

5d is Good for the money , 7d is wooly - my opinion

My methodology was..

70-200 canon F4 mounted on sticks, composed 5d image at 200mm, repalced 5d with 7d and zoomed back until the composition was similar in terms of FOV

Sorry to keep playing devils advocate, but those pictures are very different. F4 is way to slow for the 7D... if you want the dof to match the 5D.
A 50mm at 2.8 (5D) would roughly look like a 35mm at 1.8 (7D). That's what I was saying about the 5D's forgiveness, you need quick lenses on the 7D if you want similar DOF characteristics. You can still get DOF with the 5D using slow lenses, not so much with the 7D. The color profiles also look different in each grab.

DR seems to be better on the 7D... (?)
But what are those lines in the dark blue whit the 5D? Are they present on the actual sign? It seams 7D has a little less details and that compression is not as "good" as the 5D...

Are these Jpegs from the h264?

Thanks.

Hard to judge DR... both images would need to be shot flat.

The compression looks better on the 5D grab because of the DOF. f4 is incredibly slow for the 7D.

DR - both shot on neutral setting, natural light may have varied so not a good test

----

The sign is made of corroguated plastic

I think the 5 shows this and begins to alaise it too

----

F4, well I have a 70-200 F4 lens, in my world carrying and mounting a couple of zooms is very practical, its actually only one stop darker than the widest you can buy

Once one moves to lenses like the 200F2 nikkor you are talking big bucks and big unportability that would not work for me

I think that the codec is indeed stressed by the DOF in the 7, and therefore the 5 wins because of this when one is using with a practical lens set one can get shallow DOF with the 5

That stressing of the codec would also point to less 'real' tests showing up the differences less and the dark portrait stuff looking good

They may both degrade equally as the image becomes more complex

my worst experiences (not repeatable tests) seem to be showing the 7 looking horrid with a wide lens at deep DOF in a complex envionment (steadicam through a room)
