Is this adapter for pl-lenses? If that´s the case, where can I get one?!
compact_rig.jpg

This is the HotRod adapter to put PL lenses on the Lumix GH-1 (or any other Micro 4/3" camera). It is available exclusively from Abel Cine Tech.

As Doug stated, a PL mount will not work on the Canon 7D because the lenses would protrude into the body of the camera. There is only 7mm between the mount surface and the shell of the camera body.

Mitch - your website is nothing less than an excellent resource on so many things, and this link to audio for hdslr shooting is just one example.

Thanks.

Agreed Mitch! Thanks for chiming in...

So as of right now, I'm looking at getting the 7D, 50mm f1.8, and a good L series zoom lens. I'm also going to buy the zoom for audio- figure its good to have for the price (and 2 XLR inputs) plus it can double as an audio interface via USB for recording stuff directly into my mac. When I have more money, I will eventually purchase some sort of grip kit. Looking at "Captain Stubling" by RedRock as it includes a FF unit, rail mount and handle bars. Then finally I will get a good matte box with some filters and a LCD monitor. Until then I'm just gonna rely on a lens hood and thread filters....ugh. I think for the time being the lenses and Zoom recorder will get me up and running to shoot stuff until i have the necessary funds to purchase the rest.

HOPEFULLY, the Scarlet will be released within the next year and I can either sell the 7D or use it as a "B" camera. For the time being, I think the superb image quality and low light abilities of the 7D will get me by.

What do ya'll think?

I 2nd the notion on the tripod, but do remember to get something soild, if you can get the miller solo dv 20 do it.

Excellent tripod system for a small camera like this, even if configured with a lot of extra goodies like a mattebox, HDMI recorder, FF, monitor, etc.. Another good one to look at is the Cartoni Focus 100. It is excellent when paired with the Miller Solo VJ carbon legs. Cartoni Focus 100 kits sell for about the $1300-$1500 price range. I think buying the head and the Miller legs separately would be about $1700-$1800. Or you can use the Solo DV legs like in the B&H link above. The VJ legs are better though. 3-stage and they hold more weight. Not that the extra capacity is needed, but it makes for a more stable system and they could also support a small jib with the lightweight camera setup if needed.

Im not a fan of SOLO legs

They are a PITA to make small adjustments in height that help put final touches on a composition

I think satchler speed lock are worth the extra mass/money

Get 2 zooms...the 16-35mm 2.8 and the 28-70mm. Some of the best lenses you can buy. I would risk to say these lenses are more a series of primes on the same lens. If i were you I wouldn´t worry about the RED. I had that idea too but I decided to buy whatever suited my work...If I had to wait for RED to release something I wouldn´t be working for over a year. When and if they release something I would judge what to buy. One thing I am sure...I am not going back and buy a 2/3 inch sensors. I have still 8 2/3 and never again!!! So either RED releases a good S35 camera or I will skip it. I must make money and keep working. A 7D or a GH1 gets paid with one job if it is not well paid, so $2000 more or less don´t make a difference if you actually live off filmmaking.

Well like many of you, after the announcement Nov 30th I decided to buy the 7D as well. Not that I do not want or plan on purchasing a Scarlet, but I have four projects starting up and I wanted to move on from the HVX we have to something in between that has great night shooting capabilities since I need capability before May/June.

Given I am going with the Scarlet 2/3, I will probably get the Canon plate.

But enough about that, I had some questions maybe you all can help on.

1) I'd like to get an LCD screen the size of the one on the back so I can put it any other way. Like if I want to shoot from really low, on the HVX I can just turn the screen up to look at it. I don't want to start with something super expensive (eventually I'd like the marshal for it, but not yet). Seen anything like that?

2) I'd like a handle on the top to hold from above when shooting low. Everything I have seen is REALLY expensive. Thoughts?

3) Has anyone tried using the juicelink on the 5D, was the quality of the audio okay? Can we expect this same quality of audio from the 7D once they hack the firmware to shut off the amp pres?

Regardless, this is going to give us a lot of flexibility and will probably be a secondary camera when we get the scarlet later (we like to shoot some shots from multiple angles).

Oh, and a 4) Where can I find a fluid head that is not SO expensive. I realize you get what you pay for, but I want to start lower and move up. Something that isn't built for 20000 pounds :)

Thanks!
Rick

Hey Rick,

I was disappointed with the November announcement as well. I had hoped that RED would not increase the price but they did. Now I am saving up even longer for the camera. Regardless, I have done some research on the 7D and here's what I came up with. First off, as far as a monitor i would go with a company called IKAN. They make a 5 or 7 inch one with HDMI input which is necessary to use with the 7D. (It also gives you full HD video so u can focus from the screen). I am not sure whether you would like a handheld or shouldermount style support system but from what I've found REDROCK MICRO makes amazing stuff. I am going to purchase their shoulder mount. Its $400 and includes carbon fiber 15mm rails. It will also allow you to mount your monitor on it via an arm that you could attach to the rails. Now for audio...I've heard bad things about recording directly to the camera. I have found that the best solution is the ZOOM h4n recorder. It has 2 XLR microphone inputs as well as 2 high quality condenser mics built in that are coupled with high quality preamps. You would obviously need a slate to sync up the audio and video in post. (For reference audio that would help speed the syncing process up...you could run a line out of the recorder into the mic input jack on the 7D) As far as a tripod, I would look into Vinten for some mid range stuff. I've got a cheapo "Sunpak" tripod but its got a very nice fluid head and its worked fine for me. (especially with a lightweight DSLR).

2 other things to concider...a Mattebox and a Follow Focus unit. Redrock Micro also makes these, and they are very reasonably priced. All together, if you plan on going the 7D route, prepare to spend a good 3,000+ when all is said and done. But remember, most of the accessories can be used o the scarlet when it is released!

Hope this helps!

J

I can say I do like the extra features, and having priced out other cameras it seems still a lot cheaper of an option, but yeah, it means I will be saving up a bit more as well.

I just took a look at the IKAN. Very good recommendation. I really like the false color and sharpness feature modes of the Marshall, but with this, I can at least get something usable for HDMI. I couldn't find one that did full HD video on their site (IKAN), they all seem to do less. The V5600 seems to have the highest resolution.

I'm not looking for shoulder mount, but definitely hand held. I will certainly look through the REDROCK stuff some more. It seemed like a few things there would work, but man that stuff adds up quick. Their cinema DSLR setup looks awesome. At least they have a lot of expandability which is good!

Yes, with the audio I have heard the same things. Mostly it is because of the poor amps inside and no way to shut off the AGC of those amps. Beachtek made a unit for the 5D2 (which I am sure must work with the 7D) that emits a constant 16k tone you edit out later. That seems annoying. The guys doing the 5D2 firmware hacks are working on the 7D. If they can shut off the amps and ADC then hopefully the sound is acceptable. It would be SO MUCH easier to capture to one place BUT if I don't, I already own the Sony PCM-D50 recorder. I had the zoom, but when recording ambient noise for background (I do more soundtrack, foley and editing of audio than anything else at the moment), the Zooms had TO MUCH converter noise. The Sony worked absolutely beautiful in capturing very quiet sounds. With the D50 I can use the juicelink to give it XLR (since the sony option is not that good) and then use the juice link with either in the future (win win). I don't really want to line up all the audio afterwards, but, I will. Since I am so audio centric, I am putting the effort into that side since I will be doing the scoring and mixing on these projects later (while someone else edits and color corrects) :)

As far as the tripod, thanks for the tip. I see some Sunpaks that look VERY usable so I will try and check them out!

At least the camera comes in tomorrow and I can at least start experimenting with it!

With Scarlet 2/3" Fixed being released so earlier (than I expected), I have my doubts about getting a 7D.

Anyway, it would be a nice camera to play for some months, specially with the stills (since I never had any decent still camera).

The zoom is a good price and if you are catching mostly dialog or louder sounds, it really does work great. The *only* issue I had with it was ambient recording, so I just wanted to let others know if you need to capture a lot of room tone, I found the converter noise when I amped up the room tone a bit to be too much. That said, it has got to be better than what is recorded on camera!

Pietro, I wrestled with this as well. I have a D90 and the video implementation is SO bad on it, it was useless for what we needed. So, out with that. It's a FANTASTIC still camera. But, I have more interest in video. Given we have a bunch of projects starting (and some of them are sample footage for the investors) it was either outfit the HVX with a 35mm kit to get the flexibility we needed or go with the 7D. I had the opportunity to play with both a 5D2 and a 7D before I ordered and I can say, I was actually blown away by the quality of the results. Sure, there are limitations, but for shallow DoF stuff, it is SO easy to do with the 7D and the picture quality in low light is stunning. I definitely do not regret hoping on this.

As for the REDROCK stuff, I looked through their site last night A LOT. It still amazes me how much people charge for certain things. I wanted to drop a few more suggestions for people. I want a cage around my camera for holding it, mainly because we do a lot of fight scenes and we do like to run the camera VERY low for these. For that, I just found this last night:

http://www.idcphotography.com/kart/index.php?p=product&id=124&parent=26

Kit 2 looks perfect for what I want. Granted, I still think it's overpriced for what it is, it saves me the time from having to have one made.

Also, for even cheaper, there is this:

http://www.indifocus.com/products_indirailsprodslr.htm

the indiSquare, although it's a lot bigger in size and doesn't seem to have as many options for it that I can see. Of course, for $100 could I really complain?

I have the indiRails that I used with my HV30 so I am trying to figure out if I want to still have the rails available in case I want to use a Matte box in the future. I can see making it all fit together, but I don't know if I want ALL that extra weight.
