Hi,
I have got a footage which has been shot on Red One for a 40secs commercial. It was shot in 4K 2:1.
Editing has been completed using log and transfer and grading/scaling has been done in Color and sent back to FCP.

But when we are converting the footage to DV Pal it is coming squeezed from all sides ie smaller than the actual size.

Can someone help?

Thks
Harcharan

Hi Harcharan,

You will need to resize to 1152 x 576 (to maintain the 2:1 aspect ratio) and apply a horizontal crop to the 1152 --> 720, resulting in a 720 X 576.

Hope this helps.

Scale to 1152x576 as Sandeep suggests. But the cropping is incorrect.

For 4:3 PAL you crop to 768 px and scale to 720 px horizontally
For 16:9 PAL you crop to 1024 px and scale to 720 px horizontally

Thanks for the correction, Jorgen.

For my education, can you please give outline a brief of the steps.

Thanks,
Sandeep

and if u dont want to crop, just scale, what is the best comp size to begin with?

My suggestion will be Harcharan, You would have used 4:3 frame guide while you are shooting so you are cropping and scaling the 4K / 2K image fit in to your 4:3 DV PAL FCP Timeline. The only thing you need to do is scale the 2K to fit into your DV PAL Timeline with the framing you done onset.

Are pixels square at DVD SD sizes?

Are pixels square at DVD SD sizes?

I have a question about SD pixel sizes?

Are the pixels square in both DVD sizes for 4:3 in PAL and NTSC?

It would seem that 720x480 does not give square pixels in 4:3?

720/480=1.5 but 4/3=1.333

and in PAL

720/576=1.25

both 1.5 and 1.25 do not equal 1.33, so you cannot map square pixels onto a 4/3 screen just with crop, the image needs to be squeezed or stretched horizontally making all DVDs somewhat anamorphic?

I have noticed that some DVD burning software fits the 720x480 NTSC to the full height of the screen and some others put black letterbox, without an option on which way you want it, making things more complex...

What is the "right" way to (squeeze/stretch) fit 4:3 into the NTSC 720x480 size and PAL 720x576 sizes for DVD and or SD?

Is there a link that give the right pixel aspect ratio for the pixels used in all SD digital formats?

This link says the PAL size is really 704x528 I guess stamp boxed into 720x576? So what is the true NTSC size that gets stamp boxed into 720x480?

Thks you all guys

Hi,
Thanks for all the suggestions.A special thanks to my friend Sandeep for calling me all the way from US and having a chat on the subject.

But is someone can give a detailed workflow with camera settings for best results then it will be great.

This forum rocks.

Starts to answer the question... it's a big pain in the ass.

Don't get me started on interlaced field order.

WTF? 720 x 486?

DVD burning software talks about 720x480 so how do I input 720 x 486 images?

Thanks for the link, it helps a little, but should not someone come up with a standard for SD digital frame images that works on all formats?

What do people do to fix these pixel ratio issues, image aspect, and image pixel size issues? How many different SD formats should I output?

Does DVD burning software think the input files are 1:1 pixel aspect and adjust itself, if so will I end up with the adjustments being done twice?

How can you know what is going on? What does the DVD player do with the images?

I could tell things were not coming out right, but I had no idea the SD issues were this mixed up...

Thanks again for the info and link, I guess I will have to try to figure out what the DVD player does. Using a Media-player to play the DVD on a computer brings up more pixel aspect issues since a TV may use un-square pixels but a video board has square pixels, so where is that get made up?
