Hey!
I'm searching for an (wide-medium) Anamorphic Zoom that covers 6k/5k.

The Director for an upcoming shoot in 2 Weeks wants some anamorphic Vertigo Zooms, in really dark scenes.
Best would be 30-120 T2.2. hehe. havent found anything near that.

The Hawk V-Plus 45-90 looked really good but i talked to Hawk and they said that none of their Zooms will be available for rent this year.
Angenieux 56-152 looks nice but is a rear anamorph, so it wont give me the flares and oval bokeh, right?

Is the Letus AnamorphX Pro Adapter worth trying? Haven't seen a lot that was actually shot with it...
I think a Fuji 19-90 with the Letus adapter would work but i'm not really sure about the final imagequality.

is there another option?

thanks!

Most anamorphic zooms (except the Hawk you're mentioning, Panavision's 40-80mm and 70-200mm, and the old Lomo Foton 37-140mm, all of which have the anamorphic element in the front) are spherical zoom lenses that use a rear adapter, and thus, won't give you the traditional anamorphic artifacts. Plus you lose about one stop of light vs. the spherical version of the same lens. Any 35mm zoom rear adapted to anamorphic should cover 5K/6K without any problem.

Haven't tested the Letus by myself, but it may porthole when using the wider focal lenghts of the zoom. So your best option may still be an old Cooke 40-200mm (T/4.5) -used in many features during the 70's and 80's- or the new Angenieux 56-152mm T/4.

Or if you're shooting Dragon or Epic, just use a spherical zoom wide open if needed, at 4.5K/5K, and crop to 2.40:1. This way you lose the anamorphic artifacts as well, but you gain a stop in exposure.

I just finished a short film whit Dragon in ANA 6k 6: 5 with anamorphic lenses ARVIC T2.2 but is prime not zoom.
All smooth, but are very heavy ehehe

Pretty much any 35mm 2.0x squeezed ana zoom will work with 6k since you are using a centre crop of the sensor and since the Dragon's sensor height is shorter than a proper 4:3 sensor in any case.

Yes, unless you aiming from something much, much wider than a 2.40 : 1 aspect ratio once unsqueezed, a 2X anamorphic lens just has to fill the sensor vertically, which most do since they were designed for the 18mm height of 4-perf 35mm film and the Dragon sensor is 15mm tall I believe. You only use a 1.20 : 1 area of the sensor to get a final 2.40 image unsqueezed so you don't actually use 6K for the image in ANA 6K.

If you can't get a front anamorphic zoom from Hawk or Panavision, my suggestion would be to do that Vertigo zoom shot spherically in 5K or 6K, just crop to 2.40 -- it's going to be easier than using a rear-anamorphic zoom and the quality will be the same if not better.

You may also consider using a streak filter if you're looking to match spherical to anamorphic. Had to match an Arri Alura to a Kowa anamorphic once and had great success using an Ultracon 1 filter with a Streak.

Thanks guys!!

I think in the end the best Option will be shooting with normal 2x Anamorphics and only do the Vertigoshots with a spherical Zoom.

@Luigi Where can i find them? Google doesnt really help finding them. With T2.2 they seem pretty nice.

Really appreciate all your knowledge!
