  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

64Gb CF

16gb cards will work just fine on EPIC.. and so will the drives with the RED DRIVE module ( for the port ) The 64GB cards are faster than the 16GB cards though.. so again the REDCODE rates will vary.

Dear Jarred,

So we need an extra module to use the RED DRIVE with Epic? Any idea of the price?

Thanks!
George

$1,100 ain't too bad. I remember paying $550 for a 16GB. Now we get a faster card with 4x the capacity for only 2x the price.

I plan on going SSD all the way on Epic. CF was great for handheld on Red One to keep the weight and bulk down. Adding the SSD module on Epic will barely make a difference in terms of weight and bulk.

Exactly Curran - it actually $100 less than current the same capacity of (4) 16GB CF Cards! and yet people bitch.

Does Red actually make/develpop these cards themselves to ensure really dependable high performance?.and consequently the very bespokeness of them increases the price accordingly?

The following is not ment as bitching, because I know that won't work. But will the prices continue to rise everytime we get more GB's? Will 128GB be $2200? Of course we get more GB's but the K's and Redcodes make the file sizes rise as well.

Isn't it more important that the $/gb ratio keeps getting better, rather than the total price?

I just thought you'd be saving more. I guess I'm just being unreasonable.
Can anyone give an astimated guess on how much footage you could shoot at 2K, RC42, 2:1 @24fps on one 64 GB CF card?

32gb cards are $579, and 64gb cards are $899........

.......
$1100 doesn't seem unreasonable to me for Red CF cards, but I have to admit I never thought I'd see the day when P2 was cheaper then, well, anything.

Heh, didn't realize the P2s had come down that much. Anyway, $1100 is not unreasonable at all for these CF cards. I'm definitely getting two of them, maybe 3 or 4.

at RC36, you can shoot about 2 hours and 42 minutes on a 64GB card (2K, 2:1 @24fps) RC42 would obviously be less.

Why are you curious about 2k running time though?

Put me down for 2 cards please! having 30-40 minutes of 4K on a single CF card is amazing. Can't wait Jarred!

I guess I'll be shooting 2K for my first projects, until I have the money to shoot at a higher resolution.

Thank you very much

You mean the extra couple hundred $ needed for some more drive space?

I see no reason to shoot 2k unless the project is mostly slow motion.

$1500 extra is a lot for me ($1100 plus 37% tax and duty). Plus I'm not sure if my computer can handle 4K at the moment. But you're right, it sounds silly

I recommend shooting at 4k and then doing a full debayer and downscaling to your res of choice. You will get better quality that way. On on my iPhone so I won't get into much explanation, but I'm sure most would agree.

Absolutely, 2K is not for normal shooting IMO (unless you're using 16mm lenses - even still...) - I only use it for slomo. 4K redcode is not as super heavy as you think - especially in Premiere CS5.

What speed are the RED 64Gb CF cards?

Sandisk 64GB CF Extreme Pro 600x meant to do 90 Mb/s and sells for $600

90 Mb/s is probably burst, and as Jarred has said before - most of those cards don't perform to spec and cannot reliably sustain those high datarates without dropping frames. That is the premium we pay for with the RED CF media. They're guaranteed to work all day long.
