645 Speedmount FOV Comparisons on Scarlet Dragon

So I finally decided to throw together a quick comparison between the FOV of the 645 Speedmount that Optitek made for me and the FOV on a standard lens.

As seen below, 4K speedboosted has almost the same FOV as 6K FF without the speedmount. Resolution/detail differences can be seen, but the coverage is still insane. Especially if you want high frame rates without losing coverage. by the way KIPON will be releasing their own medium format speedboosters (for red cameras) soon. I just got a prototipe and having the same results with yours in my own tests.

Didn’t even think about the high frame rate issue! That’s awesome.

So I got mine from optitek as well but with a mamiya mount.
Mount was perfect, flange depth totally wrong! I bought an entire set of mamiya lenses just for this mount. They said send it back to be retooled but now I’m terrified that they didn’t realize mamiya has a 7mm depth difference, it’s shallower - closer to the sensor, and it can’t be done. I don’t get it. Are they just re-machining Kipon adapters or are the actually making them themselves? They clearly hadn’t tested the mount with mamiya lenses. They assure me it’ll be fine but there ain’t much room left in the flange.

I sent them my lens as seen in the link to optiteks site to be tested. I'd ship yours to them with the mount to be redone. I had the same thoughts since mine had to be used with a 645 to 67 adapter at first and made me think "what if 645 lenses will have messed up flange?" But nope, it all works. Give it a shot!

Im thinking they are adding a basic plate to the back of the already selling 450$ kippon adapter to make it hold on to red body.

KIPPON said that the adapter they are making will be around 750/1000$

by the way KIPPON will be selling the mount with a little kit which you can adjust flange depth since some lenses have variety of flange depth.

My hesitation with MF>~APSH (like REDs) is that MF lenses are slow and not very wide. So even with the additional stop of light, and additional FOV, can’t you still get faster FF35 lenses at wide enough focal lengths to give the same FOV? Like is there any wide MF lenses faster than 2.8?

Conversely, FF35>S35 has, for example, 20mm 1.4 which is 14mm f1.0 s35-equivalent after focal reduction... a lens that wide/fast doesn’t exist otherwise... certainly not for ~$1300 ($800 for Sigma Art 20mm, $500 focal reducer)

Yes but the advantage of MF speedbosters, is they can speedboost across a larger image circle: they shrink MF into a FF sensor.

So they span 36mm across, not 23-25mm across.

That means you can squeeze a MF "fov" onto a Monstro sensor, and get an INSANE FOV.

Or conversely, you can squeeze quite a bit of that MF "fov" across 6K DRAGON (or 8K Helium).

On the flipside, as most of the FF speedboosters only shrink down to a S35 image circle, they can only cover 5K Dragon, or 7K Helium.

So...MF speedbosters have their pace - especially for adding wider FOV to larger sensors.

True... but the math does kinda point to it being a little moot (in terms of fov/dof) unless you're going to VV/Monstro (which MF lenses also wouldn't entirely cover after focal reduction... Granted Montro/VV at 36x22mm is gonna be bigger than the 31x16mm of Dragon/Helium)...

E.g. a 35mm F2.8 MF lens (if one exists) = 35*0.7 + 1 stop = ~24.5mm F2.0 "FF35" equivalent projected onto a 36x24 sensor... You can very inexpensively get an 24mm f1.4 FF35 lens, which would be both faster/wider and still cover all of FF35 (and Dragon/Helium)... See what I mean? With FF35 to S35, there are previously unavailable lens focal length/speed combos (there is no s35/APS-C lens like the previously mentioned "14mm f1.0"... it doesn't exist otherwise).

Has someone compared a 50mm f2.0 MF lens + MF focal reducer with a 35mm f1.4 FF35 lens on a RED?

Well I just did a shoot with the Pentax 67 55-100 and Pentax 645 33-55 and they performed pretty well. And the location was dark as hell. Even at 33mm the fall off is nuts since its considerably wider with the speed mount. I just like a bigger image tbh, I have a buddy that tested it with monstro and omfg its HUGE.
