  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

645/617 Development?

For me the Holy Grail is the FF35, not only for motion pictures but for stills as well. I can only imagine the day I can have HDRx full frame still images to work with.

The 645 body will be bigger than the current EPIC. We are not willing to give out dimensions yet.

:-(. But I understand :-)

Any hints? I posted a pic in the bubble blowers thread of how epic-x will fit in a cylinder (I'd post here but I'm on the iPad in the hot tub and don't know how to post the pic from iPad)

But wondered if it would still fit the 7.625 cycle or need to go to the 8" ID (dotted line in the pic).

It'll be our secret! :-). (1 wink for smaller, 2 for larger)

I'm quite sure MONSTRO will be quite close to the EPIC being released now, as far as form factor is concerned.

One of the huge advantages of EPIC is its incredible small size for what it does. Of course, rigging the camera cinema-style and everything is cool. But it can get back to roughly the same size of a 35mm camera.

For me, the absolutely incredible thing is being able to work with a camera which belongs to the 16mm world (if not lower!) while enjoying results which far exceed 35mm resolution. That's quite amazing what you achieved, Jim.

If people don't take advantage of this in a major way, I'll be quite disappointed. I hope to see some new creative options being discovered and exploited, simply because of the small size.

What lenses will the 617 use? There are large format lenses in helical mounts (for reasonable prices), but most of those have working apertures of f22 and major breathing and fall-off. The advantage, of course, if you can call it one, is that diffraction will then work as an OLPF.

What I would love to see with the 645 sensor would be a body/brain that could be used on my Alpa cameras. The ultimate digiback....

;)

Before any name changing or additional features added to the Scarlets and Epics, there was talk not so long ago about a FF35 Scarlet and a FF35 Epic. I understand that things have dramatically changed over the last year or two, but I just wanted to know if RED still has plans to make a "Lite/Epic-S" version of a FF35 Epic?

Good question, Arri/Zeiss made a set for use with the Phantom 65 ... but yes, lenses that cover this huge image circle are scarce. I'm sure Red will develop their own lenses with coverage by the time the cameras are released in the next 1-2 years ... and if they are popular enough, others might jump on board.

Also, there are probably some still lenses designed to cover sensors this large ......

This is the most important news of 2011. Epic -X giving "vistavision-like" images and these sensors are NEXT after the move to modular cameras.

kick ass! i recommend adding 20 more days to the vacation after NAB, for everyone. It's a marathon, not a sprint

Jim as a non current red owner fresh out of school what is my best option for trying to get closer to the front of the line for epic 645/617, if any is possible this late in the game? Is having a lower # red one model as a second hand owner helpful, because I wouldn't be opposed to trying to find an early red one if that somehow helped push me up the proverbal ladder? Will there be a machined version of the 645/617 that one can pay premium for, and what criteria might be entailed with that program or am I just entirely too late to remedy any of this...? Thanks so much and I cant wait to finally own a real camera one day!

Jim, Does Monstro have swing/tilt front and back? heh heh heh

The larger these sensors become, the more room there is for less orthodox focus, depth of field, mechanics - not to mention perspective correcting. But then one would need some serious lens coverage to allow for moving off axis. ( :

Kidding aside, a swings/tilt lens shifting front ( or add on) would be an incredible feature for a large sensor camera.
