Before I buy this dino of a card, I'd like to see if it can do what I am asking.

In RCX Pro:

Can the RR play 5k widescreen footage in real time without a preview buffer? Can I make color changes and immediately watch the footage without waiting for a preview bar?

RR users! Where are you when I need you? :)

No, about the only thing that the Red Rocket can play back in realtime is 4k. Even then, on longer clips the buffer runs out.

Will, there's no easy answer to this because it all depends on your system specs. If you have a couple of 8 core processors, and 128GB of RAM then I would say yes, it will play it back immediately with no qualms, lol. Also if you have a fast RAID array, you'll be able to play it at 1/4 res no problem even with a Mac Book Pro.

We did a short film at 5kWS, 3:1 compression, which I produced, but also DIT'd it as well. I had my 8TB raid on set with thunderbolt connection, and my daughters MBP with 8GB of RAM. I was able to play it back without the RR at 1/4 res no problem, I added color and it was all good. Then again at the production house, in one of our editing suites we have a Mac Pro, hooked up to the Server RAID, and 5k doesn't like us unless we enable the RR. If it was me, I would buy then RR again for sure. It is a giant help, and our editors would kill us if we made them cut 5kff at 3:1 compression without the RR.
