5K 96fps 12:1 heavy macro blocking

Shot in a forest yesterday (for a personal project thankfully) and some of the high speed 12:1 footage has real nasty compression / macro blocking.

I did a quick search on the forum and found some information about bad compression when shooting high contrast scenes at higher redcode ratios.

Check out this frame specially the tree trunk- is this normal or is there something wrong with my camera? (if it's normal then lesson learn

I would decrease compression to see what that does as well though... 12 to 1 always looks fairly bad in most instances...

I really wouldn't go below 6:1 if you're shooting anything with a lot of small detail on MX (e.g. trees).

I shoot 5K 12:1 quite often for high speed and it usually looks great. Unfortunately I think David is right - you'll have to send in a support ticket and log file to RED.

I've had a lot of problems with trees at 8:1 before with a Scarlet MX at 4k.

Well said. I always remembered how on Prometheus they shot 5:1 normally, but whenever they had shots full of small detail (most often in Iceland, with all the mottled folliage and terrain)...they would shoot 3:1....for this very reason.

I always set compression to 3:1 , letting the camera use the best it can all the time. Why not ?

Exactly guys; if you're shooting 5K 96fps on any normal REDmag with an Epic MX, 12:1 is your best compression option. Either way, the point is that this macro blocking is not normal, and it needs to be analyzed by RED.

What I mean is that you set to 3 to 1 and the camera always picks the lowest compression possible automatically.

Robino_J are you previewing this image from after effects? Or is it the same in RedcineX? Im asking this becouse in after effects there is a bug about the debayer properties and it shows low quality even in the low debayer

Not normal for sure. I shoot a lot of VFR / High Speed and sometimes at 18:1 (I know I know). This shouldn't happen.

I have ran into this quite often as well, always with high detail wide shots, in trees, with lots of light and dark areas. I found in many instances you would get better results by shooting high frame rates in 4k with less compression. However, if you find this to be a problem with your camera, please post about it because it is likely wrong with my cam as well (lol).

I am doing a lot of outdoor, I've sometimes come across some quite heavy artefacts (especially on trees) while shooting at high compression rates, but something like that is a bit too much.. I would be interested in RED's reply..

Shooting at 4K with less compression is an interesting approach. Hadn't thought of that...

But this is a textbook example of the situation where redcode at high compression rates struggles. That is a lot better on Dragon (Anyone remember Peters lovely film?)

High contrast, deppf focus, wide shot, rich details, tons of shades of green...
