  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

5D2 vs. Scarlet...Size Wise

Well I keep all my RAW files from my DSLR timelapse. So if I wanted to go back and reframe all my shots to 3:2 then I could. I just don't think most people would get it. They would just ask why it wasn't in 16x9.

So I went back and checked the official WxHxD of the 5DmkII and compared it to the only "official, Everything in life changes... including our camera specs and delivery dates..." WxHxD of the Scarlet and the results are very interesting.

The punchline is the Scarlet is shorter and thinner although taller. In the final analysis each device can be outfitted up or down in size and weight. However, neither looks to have a decided advantage. It does seem like the weight could be comparable as well when you actually check the specs.

Size:
5DmkII 6.0 x 4.5 x 3.0
Scarlet 2.76 x 5.2 x 2.76

Weight:
5DmkII 28.6oz
Scarlet <2lbs

To the people that suggest RED won't compete with stills cameras. Hello! it already does! Now factor in the ability to shoot 72fps vs. something like 9fps for the best SLR. And yes that would be full frame RAW!!! I definitely can imagine a sports or wildlife photographer that might want to just have that capability.

I expect a working Scarlet will weigh more in the 4lb range without lens when you add the battery, smart handle, and LCD/EVF to configure it like an SLR. All of this is already built into the Canon. I expect my 2/3" cinema setup like that for nature photography with the Angie 12-240 zoom will be in 8-10lb range.
