5D VS RED ONE

How can a camera be thought of as "professional" one day,
only to be not worth regarding the next? : There is no such thing
as a professional, amateur, or prosumer camera.
There are cameras, and then there are professionals and amateurs.
They make their choices, well informed or otherwise.
See David Lynch- Danny Boyle- Lars Von Trier- Steven Soderbergh....
and tell them they're using an "amateur camera"

This is a ridiculous comparison. The Red footage was lit professionally and the 5D footage was available light. We all know what the 5D's limitations are. The aliasing is no joke, the compression is more visible than I have seen on almost any other camera, and the dynamic range is limited. Having said that, it is all about choosing the right tool for the right job. They didn't shoot the film on the 5D because the Red was a better choice for that application, and they didn't shoot the behind the scenes on the Red, because the 5D was a better choice for a web video.

When looking at those two clips, the 5D does look better, it's not really an opinion, it really does look better. But, to the RED ones defense... I had some photo friends look at the trailer and we all agree it was pretty poorly lit, Red's dynamic range isn't going to show when everything is washed out from the start. Either that or the colorist mudded the footage up. You have to admit, compared to Knowing and District 9, that trailer looked very grey and washed out. Like the elevator shot? What was even happening there? Maybe that was the look they were going for... so who knows.

The RED is how much and the 5D is how much? Please. No wonder there is a lot of ridicule on this site.

The fact that they are being compared should be a bit of a wake up call.

They really are different feature sets. Even when the Scarlet comes out it will be a different feature set.

The wonderful thing about this video resolution is it is bringing the ability to create narrative picture story telling to a much bigger demographic.

The only choices the tiny indie producer has for wonderful DOF control are the DSLRs or an adapter. On top of that the DSLRs have manual and auto features. They aren't going to afford a red, and people working a day job can't afford rentals spread over a year. Same will apply to the Scarlet when it appears.

We'll all use the best equipment we can afford, rent or borrow. Why do you even worry about it?

You should be more worried if that indie director with the 7D is going to be more creative than you are with your Red camera. Not what camera he's using.

I think a lot of people on here will defend RED to the death...not to mention the Scarlet/Epic, which aren't even available yet. The 5D/7D/1DMKIV are great cameras. Sure, they have their limitations. Sure, RED is superior. But look at the price, and what they can do.

I'm a film student. I could barely afford my EX1! The Canon 7D is such a great camera for such a great price, that I can practice cinematography with a 24p s35 sensor for under $2,000. You just can't beat that. Yes, I know the 7D has limitations. But my work is only going to be seen by my peers and professors. I don't need a $20,000+ RED, or a $90,000+ CineAlta to make beautiful work...

Someday, when I am making the big bucks...I will have to work with RED or CineAlta...but right now, the 7D is a blessing. So stop hatin!

This topic is getting kind of old every other day, and I doubt there is really anything new to say about it, so I'm gonna close this one down.

Not to mention that there are several threads on the same topic

thanks.

later,
jason
