shooting on a scarlet-w as my primary camera but need something that is super run and gun to use for b roll shots. do you think this is the camera or am i better off with an a7s ii?? I do really like the auto focus features that canon put out with these 2 new cameras. both would be great on a ronin setup. will be interesting to start seeing some image quality videos coming out soon. thanks for the input guys!

Around now is the time the video industry start showing off new stuff (not to mention some stills). Might be worth checking them out for run and gun. Maybe they have gotten real this year. But JVC had cheap large sensor options. The thing now is that sensor tech is reaching from various companies and they are planning 8k on the top end, the next year might be interesting in the 4k space. The lack of good sensor 4kp50, in action and run and gun, always deterred me.

Good choice Patrick. But this is a year of flux. The new Panasonic sensor technology is pretty significant, but when will we see it?

I would prefer a great version of this with large sensor, lots of datarate and llatitude, low light, big sensor, 12 bit, raw. Except the raw, we might even see it one day, they have to have something better than an iphone:

The MKIV is hard to predict at the moment without any true footage to check for. No LOG etc..
As for lightweight DSLR style video, I'd say the A7S II is hard to beat at the moment.

If you say run-and-gun I usually think about something more along the lines of the FS5.

yes, i am leaning towards the 1dx ii as the crop factor on the 5d is going to make me go nuts. I agree the image quality from an a7s or fs5 is going to be better but in the long run, I need a photo/video camera while on shoots with the scarlet-w. thanks all

I run a7rii. 4K both FF and S35 on Canon glass with amazing stills. The camera has so much adaptability being so small too. I could not recommend anything more for this situation.

what lenses are you running on your RED? canon lenses on the sony? i had an a7sii for a while but was not enjoying the adapters and the shitty autofocus. i did not want to invest in the sony glass

Scarlet W without a Rig on it, with the wooden camera cableless battery plate and a 4" pogo pin monitor is super run and gun if you have a 95WH PAG battery or a DynaCORE mini...

as a diehard Red user, I will admit I want to get my wife a 5D4 upgrade to her 5D3 after seeing the HDR video sample. It's not too shabby... Still looks a little mushy but half decent.

Its possible to load the Technicolor CineStyle (LOg) profile into any camera that accepts these canon profiles, so new HDR + CineStyle + 500mbps motion JPEG should be pretty effective for basic 24 or 30fps recording.

in my personal opinion I found the Sonys to be a flat out disappointment. Unstable, unreliable, horrible battery life. More frustration than it's worth. A 5D3 at least has decent run time on a single LPe6 battery. Had garbage results with complete undependability using metabones adapters on Sony - and that's supposed to be the best adapter out there...

solid Dynamic range without log profile :

I can understand that! I usually run all Canon glass on everything. The auto-focusing for stills is an hassle, but I do normally manual focus with the focus assist tools the Sony's have in the viewfinder.

i wonder if there is any image quality loss with the hdr video. and hdr can only be shot in 1080 and not 4k. i do like the wifi in the 5d4 though. that is rad for easy off camera shots using an iphone, etc

thats an interesting cam. i never really looked into the first one.

The mjpeg codec is more a blessing than a curse. Yes, the DSLR's don't have Canon's Digic DV (video) chips, so they don't get the modern video codec of the C300 mkII and XC-10, but the 500Mbps mjpeg is intra frame and artifact free. I convert my clips to ProRes on import and that's the last I see of the mjpeg.

I'd much rather have that than a mushy long GOP.

Also, I really didn't like Technicolor CineStyle for the 5D mkII/III generation, but it is coming into it's own on the 1Dx mkII. Possibly because of the codec, 422 and the sensor itself. It was modelled on Cineon too, like Canon Log, and while Canon Log would be better I'm warming up to it.

A number that's on top of the list of disappointments is 1.74x, the crop-factor when shooting 4k-video. Keep it in mind.

Canon just ignores the competition and protects too many lines. So after 4.5 years we get this, a slight upgrade that would have looked dated even 2 years ago. Even as stills camera it lacks any wow-factor, doesn't compare to a A7R2. And video-mode? Sorry, nope... I'm disappointed and don't know where to start. ;)

A cheap b-roll-cam? Even a Sony A6300 is more interesting for that kind of job.

Just to clarify:

1.) HDR video only works at 1080p or less? (if so, that blows, but is understandable)
2.) You can only shoot 4k as a ~m43/1.74x crop of the FF35 sensor? (if so, that really, really blows...)

If #2 is accurate, the A7s2 and A7r2 are probably going to get a bit of a sales surge.
