  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

5D - Hack Firmware removes auto gain

I have a Canon 10d (without a sensor!), which had one wide angle lense on it, which I never removed, since I only had one lense for it anyway. Still have only one lense for it.

I used it purely for timelapse/ stop motion

Twice the screen went black during shooting, twice I removed that lense to find the sensor had vanished/vapourised?!!! etc A real wtf moment, especially the first time.

I concluded that as I sat in my car the first time, and took the lense off (which was pointing up at the time on my lap) somehow the sensor had leap out without me noticing and got lost in the car (which I checked at the time thoroughly)

Second time it happened (both times were after approximately 70,000 snaps btw), I made 100% sure I was sitting at a table, just to make 200% sure the sensor (if present) had nowhere to go/fall/ get lost etc. Again, I checked for anyway a sensor could disappear while a lense was attached before removing the lense to take a look.

The most intelligent noise I got from canon was "Where's your sensor gone?", it felt like talking to a dead fish. I should have got my mum down on them, like when she sounded out Alan Sugar over that dodgy PC..

My response was "Knowing that is your job surely?"

They weren't interested in finding out / explaining it to me either.

I thought at first, maybe the sun melted it? But then again, the first time it happened it was at night so..

Sure they paid for the fix first time, but six months later it happened again.

I can't timelapse things for a year or more with a camera that dies every five months, so didn't waste my time getting it fixed a second time. Disposable cameras are no good for long term projects.

I've used cameras that are 50years old, that still work perfectly.

Fifty years into the future and all we get is unreliable/disposable consumer crap. Screw Canon, and their disinterest in the failings of their crappy cameras, and screw their disinterest.

The only person who cared was a consumer.

Now, with all that money and creative power it could enable, you'd think they'd make the camera everyone wants right? Wrong! consumers are still the only people who care, only now they're rewriting the software too.

.. of course the 10d was identical to the 300d (just £300 more expensive), which they were perfectly happy to sell to people but with crippled firmware, which would have cost them nothing to include.

Pathetic..of course if you uploaded the russian/hack firmware update you got your 10d..

Anyway, thats my experience of dealing with, and using modern Canon gear.

Disinterested, price establishing bullshitario

I'm personally still interested in what happened exactly, so if anyone has any knowledge/experience of what can make a sensor disappear/vapourise (I don't even know what they're made from), please enlighten me!!
