  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

570 Megapixel sensor? Works for me.

Nice, but why are they keeping this monster on the ground? This sounds like a good sensor for a James Webb visible light brother. Only maybe requiring an even bigger mirror I suppose?

Or is visible light a waste of orbit money?

It's funny how so many scientists regard the Big Bang as an obvious truth. :)

(no matter how many megapixels :biggrin5:)

Yeah the big bang seems to be another effect of how humans see themselves. We view ourselves as being very finite in our existence and so we must pass that along with everything else that we do not understand.

But back to the sensor array. Would be equally interesting to see the piece of glass they are going to build for it.

I'm not going to let this turn into a theological debate, but the Big Bang (like evolution) did happen, it's no more a theory than gravity or magnetism. You can debate the why's but not the ifs, at least if we're taking science.

Fair enough. I wasn't trying to turn it into a theological debate just that if you think about the universe having a limit its kind of funny...to me at least. Also I'm not a religious person and I'll just leave it at that.

I was trying to steer it back to the subject of the sensor or at least the glass that would go in front of it.

Big Bang doesn't mean the universe is limited. It just means our universe is probably limited. There very well could be other universes.

Great point. Now all we need to do is make a sensor that can see beyond our universe.

Enough said
Unlimited Resolution.

I met the designer of this system, a retired engineer. It's recorded on huge sheets of expensive, hard to obtain, aerial mapping film. Not much call for film that size usually. Hard to keep flat on exposure also. He designed and built his own lens for it. A huge piece of precise glass. Google Earth is the only proper way to really view the resolution because you can zoom. The paraglider shot is over Black's Beach, a nude beach. The resolution can easily show the naturalists below and the guys with binoculars on the cliff above.

Where does the universe end and when did time begin? Questions that have always screwed with my head. I doubt this lens will end my confusion but it does look amazing.

If you want your brain to take a trip look at this map of the universe. Its an interactive sliding scale that goes from the smallest space to the theoretical limit of the universe.

This isn't a theological comment either:

Anything not directly observable is hypothesized from existing best data.

Theory != fact

Awesome! I just spent a lot of time reading everything!

I also have this GIF:

By that definition nothing is a fact beyond the fact that your own thoughts exist. The key statement was "as much a fact as..."

You can't visually observe anything conclusively. And we sort of *can* observe the big bang so...

Of all the instruments we have at our disposal I would think someone who uses a camera for a living would know that visual confirmation is one of the most potentially misleading sources of information we have.

Great stuff Andrew and Pietro. On the gif I wish there were also a bar chart comparing mass, which would be very interesting.

Love how they included the smallest thing visible to the naked eye in the link Andrew posted.
