This is pretty awesome. I put a 1TB SSD and the GoFlex Thunderbolt adapter together and it works great! You can find 1TB SSDs for about $450 and the GoFlex $99 so for a total of $550 you have a bus powered 1TB solid state drive that gets 350MB/s write and 385MB/s read.

I am going to be using this setup on our upcoming 4 country shoot where we will be mostly out in the field with out any power. I will be offloading the REDMAGS to a couple of these during the day and then offloading the SSDs to a larger RAID when we get back to home base at night. The reliability of the solid state drives will be nice as we are running around the jungle with our Dragons.

the go flex TB is great...never had any problems with mine....i actually got it to offload the SSDs from my BMC...

For storage/playback it's a neat idea for sure. I'm assuming it is usb3 based which should not be a problem.

The SSD is SATA and the GoFlex converts that to Thunderbolt which allows for the 385MB/s read speed. USB3 would only get about half that in real life.

Yes I've done it in the Rainforest with USB3 Mypassport 2TB drives, wich start at 130MB/s and when near full gets down to 65MB/s.
Your approch means you can double the GB you can transfer without a power plug! Are SSD less power hungry as there have no spinning drives?

Nice find!

That's my understanding. We have a very low shoot ratio so I will be able to offload to 2 simultaneously so we an instant double copy.

The Lacie is only $120 more and you get a real enclosure, for some that will be appealing. I don't think the ruggedization is as important for SSDs though...if you look at the external cases most manufacturers are putting them in they are quite slim and minimal. It's nice to have options.

True, but you get a more rugged solution you can take on the road. Yes, it is a shame you need to waste the 1Tb drive with my option, but you end up with a better road warrior option IMHO.

But only one TB port no?
