Not sure why I'm just noticing this, but just realized my 512gb Mini-Mags only hold 480gb. Searched through the forums but no dice in finding out why they aren't 512 as advertised. Any help?

Hi Tanner,

Welcome to the world of computers and their peripherals. What you are seeing is a GB vs. gibibyte, Decimal vs. binary or 1000 vs. 1024 (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gibibyte) variance.

We've been using general purpose personal computers for over 35 years now. Since they are so wide spread and billions are using them for their day-to-day activities, computer hard-drive data capacities, data handling and file structures are considered as general knowledge or commonsense so to speak. Hard disk drives use spinning disks and reader/writer attached to mechanical arms to store/retrieve data. SSDs or Solid State Drives are another form of a hard drive with no moving parts. On top of aforementioned "decimal vs. binary" variance, you have other issues to contend with. Just like when using a filing cabinet to store files, they require additional space to format, internal housekeeping activity and setup arrays to store and retrieve data. Therefore, you'll never get to use the advertised capacity.

Here are links to further your knowledge on both hard disk drives and solid state drives:
