  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

I might order the Scarlet kit and thought about additional ssd's.

4x64 plus the one 64GB from the kit will give more flexibility and safety if a drive fails. Also will be a great option to copy data on the job.
A 256GB plus the 64GB would allow for longer recordings but less safety.
2x128GB plus the 64GB from the Kit might be the best option but costs about $400 plus.

What is your planed setup, or what would be your sugestion?

Depends on the kind of work you do, doesn't it? If you have somebody working alongside as DIT who can copy the data from the SSDs then 64x4 is the safest bet. But if you have to shoot loong loong takes without the chance to mount media then maybe the 256 is the best idea. Compromise at 128x2? :)

Thats what i thought but hoped i miseed something and could safe $400
128GB versions might be the way to go. Probably the reason why they cost more ;)

2 128GB cards seem like a good baseline to me. That would give you two half hour rolls which I think is about the maximum for a live event you would need uninterrupted. But I'm still going to pick up the 64GB in the package as well since that seems to make the most sense for security with short form work.

I will recommend 128GB for these reasons

- Starting with 1x128GB is probably reachable in terms of cost, while still providing enough recording time to do an interview withouth breaks.

- It is a good baseline to do upgrades from as another 128GB gives you really decent recording time

- Data transfer rates the coming 3 years makes 128GB a good size when you have to both record and transfer on a laptop simultaneously.
(For a long interview session, I would rather have 2x128GB than 1x256 due to the very long break you would encounter when full)

However.. The very best option I would say is to rent extra media those few times it is needed.

And don\t ever carry less than 128GB. I mean it! :)

You probably ment two 1 hour rolls ;)
That would fit a lot of life cases. Lowering to 3K would further expand recording time by about 40% if i remember correct.
I'm also looking for a external recorder for longer stuff that would be ok in 1080p when 256GB just does'nt give enough.

So i might choose the more expensive 128GB option for its better usability.

128GB @ 4k 6:1 = 45 minutes. So if you allow a 5 minute pre-roll about half an hour. You would be sorely disappointed if you needed a full hour and only had 45 minutes. ;) You would just have breathing room if you assume a half hour.

Or switch to 8:1
Last show i shot was a derniere that lasted 2x 60 minutes.

So, with 6:1 i would have a problem.

I cannot afford one, but if I could, I would choose the 256 GB because this would give me the opportunity to record two hour long lectures in 4K! I am actually surprised at how many paid job opportunities I have gotten just by simply putting a camera on a tripod and recording lectures. This would not be the main purpose of a Scarlet of course, but it would still be a means of settings ones self above the competition by being able to hand a 4k finish to a client who might be expecting youtube quality.

Seems like a tremendous amount of overkill.

Specs say "16-bit RAW Processing : Compression choices of 18:1 to 3:1"
The sticky thread http://www.reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?66210-Scarlet-X-Data-Sheet shows some recording times with different compression too.

Oh, excellent. I thought our compression options were 'stuck' due to limited processing. I would like confirmation that we can record at lower compression at 4k but if so I would change my vote from 2x 128GB to 4x 64GB. At least for my needs 64GB is perfect for narrative and short form work and higher compression is fine for live events which don't really need 4k worth resolution or less lossy compression for greenscreeen etc.

Personally I prefer 64 GB, multiples of. Most of my work is television commercials, so short structured grabs. 64GB is similar to tape & film stock durations. I also use DIT services , so I want to keep the work "up to him" & also be across any problems quickly. The longer recording times are great for certain types of projects but there is a price to pay for savings in purchase costs..... longer transfer & back up times. I would much rather by shuffling cards frequently than keeping 1 SSD card loaded in camera for hours on end. Of course this all depends on your own projects & workflows, just trying to illustrate the 64 SSD card does have a place & is not necessarily the domain of the budget conscious.

But for life events 64GB SSD's would still be pretty short. Unless i use 3K and compression above 12:1.
I'm still evalating a new cam and have to convince the boss. But i'd be more then happy to shoot with a Scarlet. Even i'm a bit scared of the huge data compared to my previous work.

Still looks like 2 x 128GB's might work for more cases then 4x64GB. Especialy since i work as a one man show most of he time.
Or 4 x64 and the live stuff on a external 1080p recorder... Hmm,..

I'm still interested on what kind of SSD setup other users will run.
And if someone could confirm 8:1 4k on the Scarlet this would be great.
