My SCARLET MX still makes great images. It has a really pretty texture - a superb copy. I've not had too many issues with matching MX to Dragon footage, under proper lighting.

But it is true that the market value will drop like a rock, once Raven is in the wild. 4K for $3K.... RED DID IT!

It will be the most amazing crash cam on the planet. Not mine, though. I have big plans for it. Something that shoots this pretty is only worthless if you sell it.

I doubt RED will offer an upgrade path from MX to RAVEN, since Jarred has made it clear that the upgrade path is Dragon-to-Dragon, but who knows? He has been known to change his mind if we beg prettily enough.....

That would be a tough decision, actually, if RED did such a thing. The value of keeping it working versus the value of trading it in isn't entirely clear.

Me, I'm sure. No way. The Raven is good for getting an entry level RED and a great B Cam but there's too much to give up on the Scarlet Dragon to consider it.

I don't know what to think. Raven seems pretty nice. Smaller, lighter, with a mic, wifi, the new screen, 120fps, just for that last option I would love it. But I know that I shoot 4k on the scarlet D only when I really need it, ie only for higher framerates. It's a bit too cropped and noisy for my taste, that feeling was not as strong on the MX. Maybe owning both. Buying the brain alone and sharing the accessories....

Those estimates were converted directly from my current setup(conservatively), so I consider that to be an entry-level package. If your able to get by with 2.5 hours of media that's great, but wouldn't cut it for the stuff I do. Even with a DIT there isn't much of a buffer there. Same with batteries, when I travel on multi-day shoots the last thing I want to worry about is conserving power.

Right back atcha sunshine :)

Then you're probably not charging enough, sunshine....maybe time to up your game.

I'm not a particularly religious man but...

AMEN to that!!

Which shoots "only" UHD 4K at up to 30p. Raven shoots 4K at up to 120fps.

The Scarlet MX to Dragon upgrades ended some time ago, but I don't truly think RED can provide an upgrade path on a body this inexpensive. It's actually impressive a company of RED's size can pull off a camera like Raven at all. Though, anything is possible at this point.

Yeah, if they were starting from scratch this price point would not be possible. But with all the R&D heavy lifting already done it appears they were able to pivot on a whim (my guess) and make a camera that fits a whole nuther market segment without intending to disrupt the other segments they work in.

Some think maybe they've done too good a job with this release and it encroaches. My thinking is this is the new normal. Get ready for exponential tech rather than linear. We should ALL celebrate this camera as it may just be an inkling of what is coming for all segments.

Will we ever see a Price Drop on Epic MX & Scarlet MX Bodies?

I have PL glass so Raven doesn't do much for me if it's Canon EOS only.

Since its based on the Weapon brain style, I'm going to assume that the mount is interchangeable as well, but obviously at a much higher price since the pl mount is much more expensive.

Well Jarred has only announced one camera at one price point and I see no evidence in the photos that the mount is interchangeable. It looks integral to me.

ND ND ND ND ND ND ND ND ND (built-in)......

Anybody else? Critical if it's going to be all Canon glass!

No way this will have built in nd, but that would be cool

I will be keeping my Scarlet to the bitter end :)

I would only add to the party to compliment my workflow.

So far so good with this baby ;)

Sub-10k ready to shoot must include the base expander or something to plug in power etc as well. I guess we shall know shortly, can't wait to see the back and right side of this Raven.

Even if it's just a fixed Canon mount, a PL to EF adapter is pretty easy and there's a few of them. I'm sure with Raven there will be a bigger crop of PL to EF adapters from reputable companies.

Obviously not as ideal as a fixed PL mount, but for the price you cannot complain.

Could be wrong, but I don't see any motion-mountage/internal-NDage in the last pic (which allows you to see the mount and down the barrel to the sensor).

Those mounts suck

Very limited in compatibility

Not all PL lens will work

We sold our Epic last year and were about to purchase either a Sony FS7 or a Canon C300 Mk2 but now we have another option to consider and I'm excited at the prospect of getting back into shooting RED :001_smile:

Most of our work is observation documentary work so will Raven be able to shoot good quality 1080p? We have no requirement for 4K yet for our broadcast clients and would prefer to be able to shoot for longer run times in full HD.

I'm also hoping that Raven uses less power than Epic so we can get much longer run times without having to for heavier batteries. Small is beautiful in the doc world!!!

We were at IBC recently and it's odd that RED chose not to announce Raven at the show, they would have been swamped on the stand!

Best wishes

Scott

I highly doubt Built In ND

It's Canon Glass just thread a 77mm Filter and your done no MatteBox Needed

Or 82mm, or 56mm, whoops it got brighter—thread an ND1.2; damn the clouds came out pull off the ND1.2 and put on a ND.6, oh wait let's do that on a 50mm crap it's a different filter thread....... swapping NDs soaks up a significant amount of total shooting time when you're shooting exteriors doc-style.

Do you think it's possible to make a good PL to EF adapter? the length does seem a bit thin, but seems like if a good company like Woodenn Camera approached it I would have more confidence.
