  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

M43 mount/sensor size sounds like a major buzz kill, but would explain how they kept costs down and fit this into their product line.

I'd also have to agree. If a speedbooster is not possible to achieve S35, I'd have to pass. I would appreciate and respect it as a cool offering though.

And on Friday we all fall from our chairs. because we didn't expect RED to come up with a new sensor.

But wouldn't it make sense to start production of a new generation with smaller slices? If you think about it this way then it could still be s35 with 4k or 4.5k. Bigger pixels...

Sony did something like this with the a7s and if they can do it. Hehe

For me, 4K would be OK, I just wouldn't want a sensor smaller than S35.

And, with all the hints and the guessing about Raven, I still can't figure out where it leaves Scarlet Dragon owners. Looking forward to Friday.

Deakins is my favorite DP but they day he shoots RED is the day the sun doesn't rise. He's a die hard Arri guy through and through.

One of mine too, but I do feel he is a bit narrow minded when it comes to his love for Arri. Today, the high end cameras aren't that different in terms of color and DR.
I saw the roundtable for this years Oscars and my other favorite cinematographer Cronenweth started talking about 4K and 6K and Deakins just shakes his head... that's just a bad attitude that he needs to lay off. Deakins and Dragon 6K would be a wonderful combination if he would ever do it. Also, the man deserves a fracking Oscar, it's a joke he hasn't received one yet.

If the mount is m4/3 why wouldn't you be able to use say a Nikon mount Metabones Speedbooster to get S35 FOV?

I still can't figure out where it leaves Scarlet Dragon owners.

Still will be a better overall B cam for Epic or Weapon - 5K, interchangeable mounts, swappable OLPFs.

dat overcrank though! still think it will be closer to $10K than 5 or 6K.... I would lay money on it. This is new tech they're putting into the body. They are making a premium product for less, not making a cheap product for more....

SERIOUSLY doubt m4/3.

I too doubt this as I don't think Red IQ is best served by a small sensor - gets noisier etc.. as we all already know. It will be interesting to see if they have some magic stuff up their sleeve because where Red 4K shines for me is when it is achieved from a 5K capture or higher. But that is not to say it can't be improved by processing etc... I also don't think Red could ever compete with Sony at the FS level and shouldn't really try. They need to be just that little bit better and be a slight premium.

Also as to upgrade/downgrade. I am sure Red would be happy to take a Dragon off your hands in exchange for a Raven. ;)

If this has better lowlight (than dragon) and FF sensor i'm in :D

Also the auto black shade would be smart to include. As newbies are going to get to better results faster with that feature.

Seems likely that in camera ND is about to become the norm.
The need for Raw is being tempered by Prores 444 that can record 15 stops of DR.

My personal wish list:

S35 Size Sensor
4K 120 (would be amazing)
Dragon Sensor
RAW and/or ProRes
At least 8:1 compression
EF Mount Option
Full Shootable kit under $10K

I'm not keeping my hopes up. This is a tall order...and would kinda blow my mind if they pull it off. If so...I would be pretty amazed. I'm sure all other companies would begin to sweat a bit.

In providing Prores for the Weapon, Red have the tech to do downscaled output. I doubt it's expensive tbh, given that others have been doing it for a long time.

Additionally, though very high quality, Redcode isn't 'true' raw, as a sort of wavelet compression scheme. There is some interpretation of data going on. I think it could be engineered to allow for downscaled footage. In fact, you do have sRaw on Canon still cameras, which is a downscaled raw, so technically possible.

So I think we're most likely looking at:

-4k Redcode, downscaled from 6k or 5.5k window of the Dragon sensor (maybe with safety area). Up to 120fps
-Aluminium or perhaps magnesium body
-Fixed mount (EF, but perhaps PL as an additional option)
-Fixed side mini-mag reader
-Fixed standard OLPF
-No upgrade path (like C300 etc.)

Prores might actually be a possibility... it's not really a high end feature vs competitors, and certainly ensures ease of use. Downscaling chip is already there. But if so, it will be either/or. No dual record function.

I don't imagine that this is a special drone camera. Probably similar in weight to the Weapon, maybe even slightly heavier due to its metal construction.

It will sit under the Scarlet because of its lower resolution and the fact that it can't be upgraded. We already know that a Scarlet successor is apparently a long way off.

Price – <$10k for a workable setup (monitor, 1x mini-mag, 1x battery)

The need for Raw is being tempered by Prores 444 that can record 15 stops of DR.

Dynamic range doesn't depend on codec. Codec bit-depth determines number of gradations between black and white, whilst 4:2:2 etc. specifies the colour resolution against luminance resolution.
