#4K4ALL

I need to leave Reduser.net for a couple days. This tease had me all excited thinking I would finally be able to afford a Red sooner than later but now I'm not sure. So many speculations and so little information.

I know what I want Raven to be. I know what I NEED Raven to be. I just don't know if it will actually happen. For whatever reason I feel myself swinging from the excitement of "OMG could you imagine realistically being able to get a Red??" to "Oh well, the excitement was fun while it lasted."
I'm just afraid my interpretation of 4K4ALL may be wildly different from Jarred's interpretation.

I just need to know what Raven is, like today, so I can figure out whether to order my next camera this month or wait a couple weeks to order a Raven. But then again the darn thing might not be ready to ship until 2016. I need to know really quickly what it is so we can put all the guessing to bed.

Let me leave one final wishlist:
4.7K 60fps (UHD is fine. DCI would be great)
Dragon sensor
Standard OLPF (With ability to swap to others)
Redcode 8:1 (6:1 would be great)
4.7" monitor
120gb SSD
2 Redvolts

^ ^ ^ Ready to shoot kit for under $10k ^ ^ ^

Wouldn't the user base miss out on the goodness of the color science being ProRes only?

They have to miss out on something if it's a camera aimed at the lower end.

I've never worked with a DP who felt he was missing out because he had to shoot an Alexa and Prores 4444. And on all the jobs that I've worked on that were R3D or Arri Raw, I'm sure they'd have looked the same if they'd gone direct to Prores. Yes, Raw is better and more flexible but if the colour science is right and you know what you're doing you shouldn't have any issues with Prores.

Also, as a former FS7 and Epic owner I can say a Prores only Red would be very tempting. I hated the FS7!

What's really interesting is if this camera will be an under 10K offering and compatible with Weapon accessories is a potential cheaper modules line for Raven.

New body accs and modules available now are just to expensive for a budget camera. The damn Redvolt expander is almost 4K for one (being a sexy piece of kit nevertheless).

A raven needs to be a 5k camera with 60ps with 4.5 and 4k resolutions at higher frame rates. like a baby epic.. Thats it!!!! lmao :confused1:

Adam, it's best to hold off on expectations. There were a lot of people excited about weapon and then disappointed because they couldn't afford it. I think anything RED you're going to probably expect to spend between $10k-$20k when it's all said and done with accessories etc.

The thing is, it's also a year down the line. The competition has moved on in leaps and bounds. As I've mentioned earlier, I couldn't see the Scarlet Dragon being financially viable if it had to earn a return on investment anyway, even more than a year ago.

Red doesn't have any sort of responsibility to Scarlet Dragon owners to just stand still and not compete in the marketplace as it is today and they are not responsible for the business decisions of peope why buy a camera without a business plan in place get turn a profit out of it. That said I would not be surprised if a revised upgrade path to full Dragon was offered to those people.

Epic Dragon shoots 120 FPS in 4K.
I hope RAVEN is an upgrade for all the mid-range ( EPIC / SCARLET ) cameras

The Scarlet Dragon only shoots 120fps at 2k, so 4k 120fps, the RAVEN is an upgrade.

It's definitely RedCode. Look at the video. RC [xx]:1

Why on earth would Red ditch the best advantage they have over the opposition? I've spent seven years with RedCode. I have literally never edited a ProRes project. It's a non-starter for me and has zero advantage over RAW (plus a tonne of disadvantages).

Cheers from Berlin,

Paul :)

You seem to have missed that the big splash they made this year is their ProRes feature of the Weapon, so ProRes only is a big selling point for some people.
Although I agree and don't think they have a ProRes only camera it's not clear from the video anything is RC, it's blurred out so impossible to make out.

Let's put it this way. Jarred said all Dragons can upgrade to next round. What would Scarlet dragon to Raven look like? For weapon, the scarlet Dragon had a $5,000 trade in credit. I don't see you being able to trade in straight up, so the Raven would have to be at least higher than $5k. I would estimate $10,000 on top of the trade in, so probably closer to $15k for the body.

So I'll have to pay 10000$ for a camera that is doing 4k instead of 6k(stills)/5k? Logic.

There are several things here that don't "make sense" just yet.

If it's a 'fixed' lens mount, that sounds 'lower' than a Scarlet Dragon. But 4k at 120fps is a big speed jump from Scarlet Dragon's frame rates at 4k. There has not been anything said of full specs, so it "Could" do 5K, 6K (stills) but nothing has been confirmed about that yet.

Perhaps the #4KforAll is being looked into too much about price, and I like what Grant was thinking with "4K4ALL (people) to 4K4ALL (framerates! (120fps))"

Included WiFi is also a feature that a "lower costing camera" would NOT include, and people thinking they won't include R3D, yet put in WiFi, that doesn't make sense to me. Red has a RAW philosophy, and will not drop that.

So my assumptions from last night was off as well (lower costing camera), and perhaps this IS the upgrade that Jarred was referencing back in April.

You're right. The logical thing would be for you to send your camera in and then red gives you a refund. They will actually pay you to use their new camera. Hallelujah! praise RED!

Maybe they will just drop the upgrades all together.

from Grant "15,000.00"

+1 on price....for specs ...raven=the scarlet version of weapon

Yeah you're right, that's as stupid as what many are expecting here.

Nope, he said that the next "step" upgrade will be available for Weapon, while Dragon is going to be able to upgrade to Weapon with that sensor... so imagine that upgrade cost. The Epic Dragon might not be able to house the new sensor because of the lack of processing power.
