4K120P SSD USB SDXC Recorder & 5.7 inch monitor & portable PC for DSMC1 DSMC2 cameras

Hello guys, I hope you like this, with permission of the administrators and the great people at RED, what is this is currently a prototype, but will be available after summer, before end 2016..

That's what we have developed, to use with our Raven just we got, but will be compatible with DSMC1 as well as DSMC2 cameras. It is basically a Windows 10 device at the palm of your hand,
running Red Tether to provide recording over GIG-E port up to 4K120P as well as 5K and 6K at a lower framerate.

Info about -according to RED data- the maximum framerate and quality:

So 4K120p at 12:1, and 4K60p at 6:1, 4K50p at5:1, just double the above numbers as RED wrote an example using 500 mbps port and this device have a 1Gbps port.

I will need to wait for Jetpack SDI or redvolt expander (xlr module) to be able to make the recording tests, so please wait. If anyof you guys have a DSMC1 and can come to Barcelona, please send me an email, as DSMC1 camera by default have the GIG-E port, Raven currently need jetpack SDI or redvolt expander.

If all goes well, with this device, you'll be able to record onto any media, so you can compliment the red ssd's or not, so you can record on to cheap media, and also you'll be able to monitor what your camera provides, at a great resolution, as this device have a QHD native resolution display, so a 5.7 inch display with 2560x1440, this device will also allow you to edit in-situ, send share, etc ..
It can use usb drives, the internal SSD M.2 drive, or even SD cards (sandisk at 95MBps or superior, UHS class 1).

I hope you like it, It might be of your interest ?

While I think this a pretty amazing technical achievement, I just don't see it practical or stable enough for primary recording. I don't see how anyone would want to use a small PC in a monitor instead of simple Redmags, even at their cost. There's a reason Red only lets you record to proprietary mags and not SSDs or SD cards.

I do however see some other purposes as a secondary r3d backup or something, or for straight to edit situations. But in the field, just too many variables and things to go wrong.

Sorry to sound negative, I think you have an amazing piece of tech, I just think you're marketing it the wrong way and for the wrong purpose.

The concept just needs some work! Other than than it's still very impressive!

My two cents - love the idea of a PC inside the monitor but it's just too thick for me, I like everything streamlined/ slim & light.

I think it's fantastic. Can't wait to get my hands on one. For stuff like wild life where we need to shoot terabytes a day to capture that one moment this is a very cost effective and easy method. Keep up the good work.

Best advice I could possibly give you:

private message Jarred.

become friends.

get access to Red hardware accessory SDK as a partner.

put the PC in a back module, and have normal video ports, or even red touch ports for the visual touch screen (help him sell more red touch pogo pin screens)

You'll have a far better outcome.

just one man's opinion.

Very impressive, hope this works out. I can't wait to see the final test results.

I don't want to sound negative and i like the effort to put a dedicated little pc into a small box that can be used on a camera, but using RED Tether together with PCs/Laptops or even Tablets isn't a real fresh idea, so you don't get me hyped, especially since we can't see it working yet. Sorry. And when it comes to PC's it's simply about performance and components. So what is inside your device, to get an idea?

To be honest i don't see me putting this box onto my RED instead of a proper LCD (think lag, think reliability, think screen quality and much more). So additionally maybe as pure recording device, but it looks too big for that.

Basically i do like the idea of a small dedicated RED Tether target device, but this one might not be for me.

Congratulations on your achievement!

What is the price point on this Tony? USD?
I've seen you posting since the early prototypes and have been interested in the progress. Portable tethering isn't for everyone. Those who need it, will see value right away. Don't worry about those who do not have a need for it. External recording devices are ALWAYS like that. Some people/projects need them while others don't.

Thank you for your interest guys.
We need to make tests before start selling the devices.

Prices, altought not confirmed, will be approx.:

TEORED 256GB + 8 GB RAM DDR4 + Core i3 Skylake = 1.795€ / 1.895$

TEORED 512 GB + 24 GB RAM DDR4 + Core i5 Skylake = 2.395€ / 2.495$.

All models with a 5.7" 2560x1440 resolution at 500 NITS and touchscreen.
Aluminum chasis. 1/4 20 holes. About 19W of consume only. Will be able to get power from the RED cameras (via lemo adaptor).

Let me know if this prices are ok for those of you interested.

Not sure but prices probably will go up if few sales or if supply is slow.

All devices hand mounted. Delivery about 1.5 or 2 months approx. after order.

Hello Phil, compression datarates published are ok, according to red datasheet.
Red published data are for 500mbps ethernets so using a 1gbps port basically doubles that rates.
Of course we will make and publish testa once we receive the jetpack sdi or redvolt expander.
In the meantime
Can you, or one user with a dsmc1 brain lile scarlet x dragon or epic make some test using a tower or labtop with 1gbps ethernet card ?
Basically if you have a dsmc1 camera brain, just get the lemo to cat5 cable and connect the camera to your pc via gigaethernet and run red tether and make some test. Any one here can address to help un in this direction ?

Remains about 1 month for first real test.
Now a power test. As you con see teored consumes super less power.

Powered on, not too much usage: 13.5 Watts !!
AVG: 19W (18.7) !
Peak 25W

I was speaking with some guys at RED.
For DSMC2 (remember that DSCM1 dragon already have the gig-e port, so great for scarlet dragon and dragon), for dsmc2 you'll need jetpack sdi or redvolt expander, that arethe modules that comes with the gige port (thaton dsmc1dragon is already present (what the hell))
Aux port on jetpack sdi provides between 12 and 17V at 1.5A so between 18W and 25.5W so teorically teored users might be able to power the teored from their jetpack sdi, of course, users of redvolt expander, that have a 1.5A aux port as well as 3.0A aux port, will be able for sure to power teored from the camera, as 12V*3A = min 36W up to 17*3A = 51W so perfect. I mean teored consumes too much less that even the camera itself.

Confirmed, I will receive a JetPack SDI unit probably by the end of this month, for us to be able to test TEORED with Red Raven, so expect data and video tests to be published soon
