For the last 5 months, my associate producer and in house editor have been discussing , and arguing, about making the move to Premiere or Avid, given Apple's FCPX, no new mac pro's, etc. He was adamant that he would never switch to Premiere, that nobody would be caught dead cutting a serious film on Premiere. " We have to switch to Avid or nothing"
I told him it was time to go 64bit. I made very loud sighs every time we sat and waited for a render, this would not be happening in CS6 or even worse, FXPX..It was like i was an exorcist hurling latin incantations at Linda Blair. He recoiled in horror. For a week, i sent him avid vs fcp videos. And then this week, our first week since May that we were not shooting something, he realized the only thing on the todo was to conform a project for a client. He was dealing with xml's from fcp7 to rcx and vive versa, and there were a bunch of push ins that he also had go back in RCX to do, and then drop them back in to the timeline manually. "that woudn't be happening if we were working natively in raw". "No way dude, Id still have to do all these push ins manually, and retimes too". I said " Im fairly certain that if we did everything inside Premiere, the conform process would be simple, so lets take a break from the old way and at least give premiere a try just for shits and giggle if nothing else". I also showed him a few 4k videos that were on youtube, thats when it hit him. So we took a very simple project from the summer that had been one lighted in RCX, then transcoded to 422hq, and edited in fcp 7. We mounted the drive readers with the raw and then proceeded to import the project into Premiere, watched a few video tutorials, and presto, there we were staring at a 5k timeline! It was at this point that he said " This is really similar to fcp, but so much better. Im going to learn Premiere".
We then exported this video from speedgrade as a 4k and uploaded it to youtube. 300mb file size..You need to switch youtube player settings to original file and then let the file download for a while as its so much data that needs buffering.

We are working with Premiere on all projects going forward. Now all we need is a pair of quadro K5000's to sit next to our red rocket and we are set.. We are however getting smooth playback at 1/2 but i think we will choke once we lay on some effects . I do hope a new mac pro comes out soon because I really hate the idea of editing on a PC, but it may well be the future.

Would love to hear what other users are experiencing..

Bob, "original " is above 1080.
Apparently, the video may be 1080. I was just told that youtube takes the 4k and scales it down to 1080, whereas vimeo, takes 1080 down to 720, applies their sauce and converts back to "1080". To me, the youtube "original" looks better than the 1080, quite a bit better.. I wish a knew what youtube was really doing. Seems like a lot of data is being pushed over the pipe given the long buffer..

Did you really upload 4K ProRes? I'd expect a 1-2 GB file. But you'll never know what you get on YouTube after upload. Never try to cc your videos on YouTube sometimes you'll lose your original option. That happens to some of my videos. Better upload a new cc corrected file.
Original option = 10-12 Mbps
1080p option = 5-6 Mbps

I stand corrected. They took my 4k and downed to 2048x1536, which is still better than what im getting on vimeo. The picture quality is still better than vimeo, which sucks because my website host supports vimeo ( which has a nicer designed interface ), and not you tube.
None the less, we are still making the move to premiere. Has anyone tried out the Nvidia Quadro K5000 GPU ? Would like to hear some experience with it.

Nathaniel,
If I chose the "original" option, I can download the 4K version as an mov file, but it's only about 85 meg in size.
It still looks really good tho. The media dimensions are: 4096x2304

Loads right into Premiere and plays fine.

Cheers

it's really easy, actually. take all that same thought process about switching from fcp7, and switching to a PC will be a breeze. you can even dual-boot or go full-on hackintosh, but whatever.

Paul, Im not ready to go to PC. Wont that cause issues when moving raids from PC to Mac and vice versa?
