  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

4k workflow - dpx, edl?

The question would be how much it costs to get the job done at a company that already owns the equipment.

I may misunderstand your question, but if you're inquiring about the approximate cost of DI, the average DI on a major feature at one of the Big Three in LA is $250,000, give or take a few thousand, depending on 2K or 4 K, scans, prints, etc...

Actually, I wasn't the one who asked this, it was Tim Whitcomb. I just thought that this was what he asked, not the question that luki answered. I'll try not to make any attempts to clarify other people's questions in the future! :) But both of the answers are of course interesting, although I'm in another part of the world. To get back to my original question, I guess the different options are: we need Crimson (and use a company with Smoke/Flame/Lustre), or a company which has experience working with r3d-files (and might use Scratch instead), or we'll use Color.

The better question is why do you feel you need to finish anything in 4K? The fact is that very, very few pictures - and that includes most of the largest studio pictures - are finished and/or released in 4K digital versions. If you feel your project has that much potential, it should be because of the script, the performances, the direction, and the craft involved in putting it together, not because you finished it in a higher resolution that has little to no distribution advantage.

As I wrote before, it will probably be a 2k film-out. What I'm doing is I'm trying to learn enough to be able to tell the producers what their options are. If you say that there's never any reason to finish in 4k, I'll have to take your word for it. And I do think this project has great potential, and it's a very visual film, if that expression makes sense; the imagery itself is very emotional, and of course works together with the words that are spoken and the acting. Without going too much into detail it's about highlights, shadows, what's out of focus and in focus.
