I would like to cut 16:9 and I'm concerned about the 2:1 option. What is the best setting to shoot on to aquire a full-frame 16x9 image in the end. Does the camera cut the edges off the files? Will my conversion in Red Cine/Red Alert to TIFFS be in 16:9?

Any explaination would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Nick.

The sensor is native 16:9. 2:1 is cropped. REDAlert last I knew didn't export 16:9 but REDCine does. But rightfully RED is acknowledging that REDCine isn't ready to be depended on. So the danger is you shoot some 16:9 footage and REDCine goes buggers and won't export your footage all of a sudden and you have to find another computer to export your footage.

We have been shooting and doing post in (16 x 9) 4K without any issues - using REDCINE and SCRATCH. LOTS more pixels - and last time I walked by the local electronics store - I did not see any 2:1 LCDs or plasmas.

currently the only disadvantage to shooting 16:9 is that you cant use the quick time proxies...you have to export out of Red Cine first which takes considerably longer.

Set-up Question...

Set-up Question...

Would someone explain the workflow for me from camera settings to Redcine/Redalert export settings so that I can get a 16:9, DVCPro 720HD (I know it's really compressed) file in the end. Thanks in advance. You guys are extremely helpful.

There are several ways to get there.

If you shoot 4K (NOT 4K 2:1) you are shooting 16x9 - you can only currently use REDCINE to handle that file - and you can not use the QT wrappers the camera makes. You would import the files in REDCINE and set you output to 720p DVCPRO HD - I would suggest you choose 2K debayer which is I think STANDARD - (FULL = 4K debayer) or your renders will take a long, long time and If you are goin' to DVCPROHD 720 - don't think it will make much difference.

IF you are shooting 4K 2:1 - make sure you enable 16x9 framing guides in the EVF (or LCD) - you CAN use the QT wrappers - but you will STILL need to go into REDCINE and use FIT TO HIGHT WHICH which will center crop to get you to 16x9 - (unless you want to make a custom Compressor 3 setting that crops and use the QT wrappers - but that is lower quality - good enough for dailies in SD)

Hope that helps -

Thanks

Thanks

I just tried it out your solutions - works perfect both ways. Thanks very much Mark.
