  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

"4K " Trademark attempt

These people make me sick. I am going to patent "air" and prevent them from breathing it... :reddevil:

The patent game (some call it patent trolling, I'm not going to use that term here) is being played by many, many companies today. Including companies like Sony, Arri, and Canon.

And, lest one forget, Red...

None of them is patenting common words used by the industry for years on end, words like camera, lens, image, pixel, etc...
Words like 4K...

RED did steer the water when they succeeded to patent the word RED in relation to very specific area in our industry. However this word is only used by them and it is their name after all. 4K has been used by everyone for longer then 5 years. Recently it was legally blocked to be able to patent human DNA. It is sad that such a block did not come from the patent office itself, but had to be run through courts. The very definition of what is eligible to be patented should prevent anyone with common sense at the patent office to even look at such a application (for 4K). One of the key words mentioned in the requirements is "unique". It also mentions that it should be something invented or discovered by the applicant...

You can look at it however you want. But the fact remains that the intent of patent law is, in this age of instant Internet lookups, endless litigation, and race to the bottom pricing in numerous fields, being completely perverted into being a legal weapon rather than IP protection by many companies. And I would point out that just within the last 7 months, Red applied for and I assume obtained a patent on something called a "video camera." So defend all you want, the fact remains that there are no "good guys" and "bad guys" in the race to be the first to obtain patents. There are only a lot of players. You may personally like some and personally dislike others. That doesn't make either one right or wrong.
