Hello

If i were to shoot 4k, then edit in 2k on final cut.. how do i output to hdcam for festivals. (i trust i can do a 4k out later if by any miracle a film transfer was required?)

How do you output to hdcam? can i rent an hdcam recorder for 1 day?
Hum.. can a Mac output to hdcam? or do i put my final edit into the camera to playback to the hdcam?

Example: Final cut>export to R2 file>copy to RED Drive>connect RED to HDCam recorder?

If the time comes to do a 4K to film, i just give my edls and Red files?

Thank you all for your wisdom :)

XDCAM HD???

HDCAM is a tape format that doesn't directly relate to HDCAM AFAIK

HDCAM is a tape based 3:1:1 "uncompressed" format (on tape)

XDCAM is mpeg2

Or did I lose something in the mix

you should finish in 4:2:2 uncompressed or 10-bit prores and play over to hdcamdeck via hd-sdi

HDCAM is not uncompressed. Its 8 bit down rez 1440x1080 with a heavy mjpeg compression on it.

The best route would be to output DPX files from Scratch or REDINCE then take it to a telecine post house near you with a HDCAM deck and they could transfer it HDCAM for you.

Hi cinemano.
THis is a little more complicated than DV workflow in FCP.
For a start FCP will not render out 2K DPX files from Red R3d
files. You can offline in FCP but need to finish your 2K in a
machine like Scratch. Conform/Grade in 2K and colormanage your project
for film out thru a FILM LAB and proper POST PRODUCTION FACILITY.
Film and HD colorspace have to be taken into consideration before
you can produce a HDcam festival copy from a 2K DPX digital master.
If you offline in FCP&Prorez 422, grade in COLOR then output to Hdcam that can be a
cheaper way out to a HD festival copy.
The offline becomes an online and produces a HD cam festival master copy.

iBloom has a great droplet that converts FCP xml to RED xml, allowing you to open the xml file in REDCINE. It has worked well for me, and allows me to do a traditional offline/online with any format I wish.
