  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

4k Recorder

Hmm.... Well, it's priced at the equivalent of $13K USD and will be priced higher once it ships to international markets. So it's going to cost more than the Scarlet brain, plus you have to buy media, which once again is not anywhere close to cheap. All things considered, it's still 1/4~1/3 the price of the cheapest currently-available 4K recorder. The HD-SDI output on the Scarlet/Epic is limited to 1080p/2K as far as I am aware. Most likely we would need to purchase an additional module to make use of a unit like this.

In terms of EPIC, I don't see any advantage when the camera can record mathematically-lossless 4K~5K onboard. For use with Scarlet, there could be some advantages, maybe. Although I'm having a difficult time trying to think of any... With the price of this, plus an additional I/O module, it makes one really consider just buying an EPIC to start with. Something like this is most likely not going to allow for recording higher frame rates on Scarlet as the compression is not the bottleneck, as i understand it. But rather the core data path within the camera, before the footage goes to compression...

Anyway, I would say the jury is still out on this one. However, I'm not really sure it applies here. Could be an alternative recorder for ARRIRAW, rather than using ARRI's $70K recorder or another option for uncompressed RAW recording from the F65... I think a lot of people forget just how good we have it with RED and their onboard 4K~5K RAW recording. ...Many are probably unaware of just how special it is and, due to various patents and such at play, how unlikely it is for other companies to be offering something similar to 4K REDCODE RAW in the near future.

Like Jarek points out, it is still vaporware. Not that I've really looked into it, but it seems like it was a no-show at InterBee... :/

If the pricing that Jeff is saying will end up to be more on launch, I really don't see the point at this though, did I miss something?

Its a 4K recorder...I understand that...it would probably be good on some like C300 or 1DX etc. where they say it has a 4K sensor, if they opened that up for such a device, you could get a 4K camera...though thats in theory right?

at 13K, you might as well use the Scarlet + the media...since I can't begin to imagine the data load uncompressed 4K would require
