Do they exist for real?

I know there have been some sneak previews, but has anyone actually seen one in action.

I have a project coming up and we would like to take a look at 4K projection. We are testing a full 4k workflow right now, but need to get specs for final delivery to a 4K projector.

I'm sure NAB will offer plenty of insight, but I need to talk to someone now!

Thanks.

At this point in time this subject line should be "4K projector," singular not plural, as Sony makes the only currently available one.

dylan,

here is a link to a sony one:

http://www.abelcine.com/store/product.php?productid=1000058

by the sounds of the bit of research i did on this, it is still a sketchy area. christie discontinued theirs i think, and sony is SLOWLY getting involved here......but hey, it can't be that new....here's one on ebay:

here's sony's corporate area:

and here is a bit of an interesting read:

They definately exist. Red has one. Red is also said to be creating one. They showed "Crossing the line" on it last year at NAB and I'm sure they will show a lot more at NAB this year in their tent--all in 4K.

Apparently there's a Sony SXRD 4K projector at the Odeon cinema in Guildford, Surrey, UK (of all places!) - they exhibited Spiderman 3, Ocean's 13, Shrek The Third & Harry Potter in 4K there. Apparently lots of studios are just beginning to remaster their old classics in 4K too (Warner Brothers are working on Blade Runner!!!)

Then it's off to Surrey with us! You wanna order the tickets Dylan?

Excellent! I can visit my mother in law!

So none in North America....other than the one in Jim Jannard's living room?

And here's a question...how will Sony respond when I tell them it is for a project shot on RED....

"click"..."hello?"... "hello!?"

hell yeah baby. the 5 major studios are on the verge on signing a deal to put 4K projectors in 14,000 screens. paying them a useage fee to save the money on film prints. when this happens, that's when it gets nuts.

who in their right mind would invest in a new film scanner at that point? the scales will suddenly tip in favour of digital. but that will take a while yet....

Quote your source for this statement, because I find it more than difficult to believe. The vast bulk of digital distribution, including all current 3D offerings, is in 2K. With only one current manufacturer of available 4K projection equipment, and with that product a bit suspect in terms of blacks and general color accuracy, it is very unlikely that the theater suppliers (there are companies that specifically do this) would give up the 2K route, with at least 3 manufacturers available and lots of proven technology. Not impossible, but very unlikely.

Yeah, JVC has 4Ks coming and a new JVC D-ILA 4K chip is in production since 2007.

Also, there are some new 4K displays, actually 4*1080, 3840*2160.
Interesting are the mitsubishis at ~25K, even cheaper than a solid 1080P Sony CRT.

Someone else has 4K projectors coming too - (and I am not talking about RED) - NAB has a few fun surprises ....

Actually there are lots of them in NA. We have one at our Northern CA studio for over a year. Landmark and Muvico have already been installing them in Theaters. National Geographic has one in their Grosvenor Auditorium. If you check out the Sony B2B Press Room you will see lots of people have purchased these projectors (see http://news.sel.sony.com/en/press_room/b2b/ and then search 4k SXRD).

When I talk to the Sony folks they seem pretty busy putting lots of projectors in lots of places. If you just ask them they will tell you all about it. It is a nice product and we have received excellent support from Sony for our projector (the SRX-R105), including some pretty significant upgrades.

AMC should also have plenty 4K projectors.... I think >50.
Dallas 12; Indianapolis 14; Riverside 16 and San Diego 12 4K Screens should be already installed.
Laso they will install ~100 IMAX Screens, but i think imax is rather going dual 2K 3D.

I said ***currently available.***

Products shown at NAB generally aren't available (or necessarily even finished) for at least 6 months after NAB. Often longer. Often never. Showing something at NAB does not imply immediate availability. Just ask Sony. Or Autodesk.

Or Red.

Well, it appears, by the specs listed for the SXRD at least, that it can also project at 2K. So why wouldn't theater owners install a system that supports both. They can project what is currently available, 2K. And be ready for all future 4K finishes. That doesn't seem that hard to believe.

In late 2006 we did a competitive bid between Christie, NEC (we already owned one NEC iS8-2K cinema projector) and Sony for a second projector for our facilities. The Sony 4 K projector was essentially the same price as the 2K DLP projectors from the other guys, so we went with Sony (knowing RED was coming). Of course we were buying a single projector for post production. It may be different for a theatre chain purchasing hundreds or thousands.

Yes, the SRX works at 2K and at 4K.
Furthermore, the DCI Standard includes 4K Masters, and we are seeing more and more 4K masters (Spiderman III, Da Vinci Code etc).

I'm not 100% certain, but I believe Spider-Man went out as a 2K DCP to digital projection venues. And I am 100% certain that the recent 4K restoration of Blade Runner went out for digital projection as a 2K DCP.
