  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

4k PRO RES... Real time in full res!!... WOW!!!!

Mark, could you be talking about the new external Red Rocket card housed in a Sonnet casing?? I know I probably won't get it out of you but I thought it was worth a try!

new external red rocket? Is it not the current one in a sonnet casing?

Nope. Tghis was prores playback, not R3D...

The Sonnet/Red Rocket card from memory only plays back r3ds, but it'd be nice if it did ProRes as well.

Cant say to much, but it was playing out of FCP -X PRO RES 4k via a video card in unmarked box independent of the mac tower... (hush hush).. which went to directly to the 4K projector and the 4k Monitor at the same time.

mmm...i actually wish the the 4k monitor was part of the apple demo...

We already know that Resolve has very slow database function as it comes from an AB tape based kind of workflow, but I am sure they are working on imporving that.

David
We do? What does "very slow database function"mean? Resolve's database function is not any different, than, for example, Baselight.
And Resolve from get go was designed as file based grading platform, unlike DaVinci 2k.

After 8.1 I have no database/conform issues with Resolve. Works like a charm...

Just sayin'

I'm probably going to get bashed for this but lets just say that the ALEXA upgrades the front block with a new 4K sensor (and replaces the SxS module with a new faster form of media) and records LOG to a 4K PRO RES what really would be would be a far superior benefit for shooting RAW? I mean if 4K PRO RES looks as good as you say it is it seems to me that shooting RAW is only going to add an extra step that in my opinion seems like overkill.

However at the moment I completely understand because what else is there!

Thats not a silly comment...

REDLOGFILM 4k was most certainly impressive to grade with. If ARRI did bring out a 4k PRORES machine.. then that would most certainly get my head turning, but that said, RAW is not over kill. I like being able to adjust thins afterward, you cannot reset white balance, gammas etc with a PRO RES file. Colour is burnt in...

Conform yes, but what database issues? What database issues, that had been resolved in 8.1? I never had any issues with database in Resolve. And I had been using it since early Mac OSX Beta...

LOL

The database slowed down everything when you worked with huge projects (100+ days of shooting) like the series I regularily work with. Used up to 5 minutes just to save the project, whenyou had to load the shots first and conform to them from an XML/EDL when you conformed between formats (in my case mov to r3d/EXR)

This was related to how the conform worked.

As you now can load just the shots you need, the database does not slow down the workflow.

It used to do that tremendously when it hit the ceiling...

Anyhow.

This is now a non-issue, as it actually works very well! :)

(And I contribute to derailing Marks lovely discovery! Sorry!)

The worst offense on ALEXA being the use of Film Matrix. Once it's turned on, it's burned in and the image pretty much ruined. You can use the inverse LUT, but it's not very effective...

Yeah...
I was discussing this with some students who turned on everything with"film" in it to get the "best possible" image...

What the heck is that thing?

Hahahahahaha!

talk about shooting oneself in the foot.

So, we can agree, that the database issue is a non issue. Any database, once it is too big will eventually slow down:-)
I'm too sorry for derailing the thread...

Yeah, unless you have to grade it. It's not pretty... Score one for RAW!!!

Final note:

Database issue in Resolve?
What database issue in Resolve 8.1+?

OK?

:)

It was not a RED ROCKET card, it was a video card that output 4k vision, very simple though because the vision coming from FCP-X was 4k anyway... thats all I know about it.
It card did not have pin structure of the deck link.. I asked many questions, with little responses.. All was very tight lipped about it.

The FCP - X was a beta test. (hence why I could be hunted down by apple for leaking this stuff.. but then again, it wasn't like it was to hidden)
What I did notice though was it had external screen settings when the operator went through the video settings... It also had import XML... which sound promising. That means we can rebuild fcp 7 projects I guessing!

But rest assured, It had me re-thinking about FCP-X , to which I thought I would never go there. 4k is over kill for most things we do at present, 4k for Movies I think is a must!.... but once you see 4k playing and editing & grading in real time .. all of a sudden it becomes very very interesting.
All I ask from FCP-X & Apple... is R3D realtime transcoding, smooth 4k playback.. (as what i just witnessed) I don't mind mastering in PRO RES so long as I start from a RAW LOG base. A friend of mine has seen with his own eyes a APPLE 4K monitor using Iphone 4 pixel dimensions, and commented on how crystal sharp images were... so things are looking good in the future. We just have to all wait for the shit to be released!!!!

Patience is a virtue. I don't have that virtue at all.

Playback... ooops who said that. :)))))

The major "forgotten" benefit of RAW is that there's less things to worry about while shooting. Forget to set white balance, ISO etc. Or set them wrong and it matters little as the image recorded is not effected. By reducing worry of "which super-hyper-mega-ultra gamma do I record with today, what black expand-contract-detail setting do I set" you can concentrate more on making movies and less on nuances of camera setup.

It's been nice knowing Mark. Unfortunately, I suspect he will hunted down by NDA police and wind up on a beach somewhere with no recollection of what 4K is or anything else for that matter. Lying on the ground nearby will be a half-eaten apple, the only clue to what might have happened. :-)
