CES will be unveiling (so I'm told) a 4k TV/monitor this week. It has been talked about for a couple of years. Is the limitation of viewing 4k from the Red an issue with the HDMI cable, the HDMI output port, or the board only being able to output 1080p? Forget why this would ever be needed, I'm just curious if someone knows. Thanks.

I wonder how large the monitor will have to be? Astro Systems has one that is 56", but with a $57K USD price tag! I shall have to wait for the post CES report to see what was released.

R1 can't play back 4k at full Rez. You'll need redrocket or the upcoming redray for that.

And this is a real name forum.

I changed to real name months ago, but it keeps coming up as my original username. Thanks.

Hopefully Red will introduce a new Red Arm to support it... it's perfect for hand-held! :)

3 company out there that make 4K monitor Astro, Toshiba and 3rd I cant say who yet (NDA) but you will see them at NAB 2010.
The Panasonic unit i need to look into, not sure what they doing at this point. now the 3 company use the same panel( only one company makes a 4K panel) Toshiba and Astro have one unit that is more or less the same 8bit monitor with some limitation however the Astro unit will give you some control over the picture as well as HD-SDI and DVI-D input with Toshiba you get only the DVI-D input and no HD-SDI.
Astro just came out with a new unit DM-3410 that had no limitation and still has the HD-SDI and DVI and the new 3G HD-SDI input at 10bit.
what needs to be knows is any LCD 4K monitor is not true 4k (4096x2160) it is in fact 3840x2160,don't get me wrong the LCDs out there will show you a great 4k image( if you need to see it, let me know and i can put together a demo in Burbank,CA).

Now as for feeding the unit with red, this is the easy part and it has been done more than few times with the red and Astro monitor, infact Astro did a test with red before red hits the market(this was done in NY more than a few years back i was a part of the team at the time, Astro side).
if you need to know how, send me an e-mail and i let you know it will be some what of a long e-mail and i already went on and on here, sorry guys.
finally yes the price for the 4K monitor is out there 55,000 is the starting point.
