Yesterday 4K London successfully projected a series of Red test shoots transferred to 35mm at The Soho Screening Rooms for an audience of industry professionals. As far as we know this was the first time Red material has been exhibited to the public on 35mm here in the UK (I'm sure this will be promptly corrected here if incorrect!!). The material was mostly captured in 4K (with a little bit of 3K 60fps material) and the DI pipelines ranged from 4K the whole way for one of the prints, to 2K for the rest.

The results were very well received by an audience largely made up of DPs (several BSC members were able to attend and give their feedback which was great). We also showed some 2K digital projections which proved very interesting (surprisingly quite a few of the audience expressed a preference for the cleanness and sharpness of Red material digitally projected in 2K). The look of Red material transferred to 35mm on the other hand was surprisingly organic, with a clear advantage given to the material with a completely 4K DI pipeline.

The subject matter ranged from candlelit tungsten environments to high contrast and low contrast daylight exterior scenes and even though this was pre-Build 16 material the Red seemed to cope admirably in all conditions. Unfortunately due to the length of time it took to get the material to print the material used was an old Build, but we'll hopefully be doing another screening soon with Build 16 material. It will also be very beneficial to soon be able to grade the material directly from the Raw files with announcements like Quantel's (http://www.quantel.com/site/en.nsf/HTML/IBC2008?OpenDocument). Our test footage was graded at Molinaire & The Look using Baselight & Quantel eQ respectively, utilizing material provided as 10-bit DPX log files.

Many thanks to all those involved including Ice Film (http://www.icefilm.com), Soho Screening Rooms (http://www.sohoscreeningrooms.co.uk), Molinare (http://www.molinare.co.uk) & The Look (http://www.thelooklondon.com).

Congratulation too.

I'm sure it looks very professional presentation even if all the shots done with B15.

I went along for a little bit and was impressed..

Against the grain I preferred the print... albeit maybe a tad dark?

It was all good.. thought if I was to single out the piece with the weakest underlying images..(I must say at this point I am niggling and there was obviously plenty of talent involved).. it was the Mercedes piece. It simply felt like the production needed more cash and a 435 with a timing box. If you make a Mercedes Ad (viral or TV) in the UK you are competing with some 'great' work..

Everything else felt great and in-itself (the content expectation met well with formal execution)

Well done 4k!

Michael Lindsay

PS I was not in the slightest bit surprised that the images held up well. The camera is a 'great' drama option.

Was it a restricted numbers viewing?

I emailed my interest to 4KLondon ages ago when this film/4K screening was first mentioned, but don't recall getting an email that it was happening. Maybe my email to 4KLondon went astray.

Any chance of further screenings? :whistling:

Hi Eric,

Sorry you got missed off the list  (I've got your mobile number but no email) - let me know your email and I'll make sure you're first in line for the next one ! Hopefully we'll have some Build 16 footage for the next one to make it a bit more relevant.

All the best,

Thanks David. Will email you so you have my address. Glad the screening went well. Cheers!
