I remember some talk a while back about a possible Red 4K LCD. Anything new on that front?

Any news on other manufacturers tackling 4K displays? At some point people are gonna get antsy and want to see their masterpieces at full res! :) I can't even imagine how awesome 4K pixel for pixel would look moving on an LCD screen.

Astro has 4k displays that were being used to show an 8k camera at NAB, downcoverted to 4k. It was an NHK camera. They also had a lot of other very interesting products.

Sony had a 4k prototype display, very large looked great showing footage from VR camera phantom i think

Considering Red's philosophy, it shouldn't be an "LCD"
but that's just me...

The resolution of Astro's 4K display is only 3840x2160. Red One's 4K horisontal resolution is 4096. So, there is no useable solution for REAL 4K monitoring on an LCD. :/

Yeah, Graeme said something about 3840x2160 being basically four 1920x1080 displays. Is that how it works? Is that why true 4096 is taking longer?

Even 3840x2160 is close enough for government work. It's not pixel for pixel, but I bet it looks amazing with 4K source material.

Red resolving power is around 3200-3300 lines though as far as I know. I think that was Graemes quote. I think its partly why EPIC makes sence to me. (I'd like to call it BIG RED)

RED may not be getting into the 4K display pool. But, other companies will be and RED will happily support them. RED RAY coupled with a 4K display would be a nice video village setup. Quick way to take a glance at footage. And of course, RED RAY going out to a 4K projector would be magnificant for watching dailies.

Yeah, but that wasn't the issue I was mentioning.

Speaking about 4K displays, Graeme said something about the fact that 3840x2160 are basically just four 1920x1080 displays slapped together (I hope I'm not quoting him wrong), which is why the resolution is just short of the full 4096.

Of course that makes you wonder, why not slap four 2560x1600 30" LCDs together and get some real f*ckin resolution! :)

It's 4 1920 x 1080...

two 1920 x 1080 over two other 1920 x 1080.

IMHO the quadHD rez of 2,160 by 3,840 is far more viable at this stage in the evolution of display tech than 4,096 by anything. The beauty of 2,160 by 3,840 is that 1,080 sources can be "pixel binned" with each source pixel populating 4 adjacent display pixels. Easy math. No scaling required.

It would also allow a quad split with the proper horsepower to show four 1,080 images simultaneously which would have numerous applications. Comparing grades during color timing, multicam live or in post, etc.

I have long had my eye to Cupertino for a 2,160 by 3,840 monitor in the 40 to 50" range. It would be great for high megapixel still work in Photoshop / Lightroom / etc. It would allow you to have a lot of applications visible at once. It would provide an entree to the living room that could display 1,080 HD content with no scaling required (likely just some sort of addressable pixel binning).

Here's to hoping that the next generation of Apple Displays will be mated with newer GPU options in the next round of MacPro towers. Cheers.
