  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

4K HDMI output

Seems unlikely but perhaps RED sees the need to protect their profits on proprietary media? If we could just hook up an external 4k recorder they'd be selling a lot less REDMAGs... Though frankly on the other hand they'd probably sell more cameras to make up for it since 4K monitoring and 4K live output is a dealbreaker for a lot of customers/industries. The reality is that there is little to no excuse for REDs 4/5/6/8K cameras to only support HD monitoring and some people will get by without it but everyone wants it.

My 2c, i think DMSC2 can do it and will get it sooner or later via software-updates. And at the same time RED will introduce a 4k-touch-screen. I think outputting 4k via HDMI doesn't have that extreme high priority for many reasons, the missing proper 4k-screen on top of the camera being one of them.

4k touchscreen is a waste. Why would you want that?

In this ever changing world of increasingly capable affordable gear, I think Red would be wise not to give customers more reasons to look elsewhere. I think that would affect bottom line the most. This has to be so doable with the boards etc these cameras have if little mirrorless can do it.

That's what this forum is all about. Holding feet to the fire. These cameras are more than capable of outputting 4k 8bit 4:2:2 for monitoring or recording proxies to an external recorder without having to attach a $5k+ expander. I get 4k output off my a7Sii, a $3k camera, and you can get 4k 10bit off a $1k GH4. I'm hoping this can be addressed with a simple firmware upgrade and not require doling out thousands more dollars for.

Is it really a waste? People love their 5"-phones with FHD and more for a reason. ;) The "Window-Effect" comes to mind, it's better to have too much pixels, even when you are going close to the screen. And 4k just makes sense, the numbers fit in much better than stuff like 2560*1440 or something like that.

I think a next generation 9"/10"-touchscreen with 4k would be awesome. And while we are on it, it should be an OLED-screen, include support for HDR and freesynch-like refreshrates up to 120hz (or more). ;-)
