Hi everyone,

I was looking for a new A/V Receiver today and stumbled over the new ONKYO sets. These things, even in the consumer package, include 4K upscaling now: "HDMI Video Upscaling to 4K with Marvell Qdeo™" So there we have it once more... 1080p is the new SD.

But when will all this happen? 1 year from now? 2, 3, 4? Jim does seem to know quite a bit about it, but won't tell ;)

But wait, there's more... engadget made me read that 1080p is not done for (yet):
http://www.engadget.com/2011/03/24/sonys-nxcam-hd-is-the-nex-fs100-brings-super-35mm-sensor-price/
So on fstop academy you can watch the music clip

So Sony seems still - with all their 4K news at the moment - to be pushing hard on 1080p. I don't wanna start a whole Scarlet vs. NEX campaign! I just wanted to share the news. Also because there's this thing I don't quite like about these comments, that "SONY listens" "60p in such a small package" mingled with the words "for the first time in history" and "unheard of ... with this size and form factor". Again a SONY web info/commercial where RED's existence is totally ignored.

Sigh! This makes me want to have my future Scarlet even more! 2011? ...Jim? :)
... oh man and it seems to be fixed now, that I can't make it for NAB ... wanted to be a part of the event so bad and see Jim and the Crew "in full life size"... shattered dreams... I envy you guys who will be there...

cheers,
patrick

Likely in the next two years. Sony and Panasonic along with several other companies that they work with to design their products have already been working together on 4K displays for a while and we got to see the working models recently, but they have also been working on 4K content delivery using high-density multi-layer Blu-Ray discs (which have been in development for several years now) and the h.264 codec which supports 4K content delivery. Whatever is going on with RED-Ray is being kept under wraps so that's a different conversation all together.

thanks a lot for the comment.
since 4K is already here, in the pro arena, the 2 year span you mentioned makes perfect sense. It'll be interesting where we will find 4K then. only pro equipment, just more widespread, or will it already be consumer/independent affordable. I'll vote for yes.

I wonder if all the panasamys or canikons will have their NEXs and what not kicked in that time to step over to 4K as well in the lower budget area or if they will still be behind. the price will be the problem for a while. scarlet is 3K and not 4K so it's a bit similar for RED in terms of resolution vs. pricepoint.

since RED is pro only we will most likely not see a consumer RED Ray sometime soon. But since everything is subject to change ;) who knows.

it's just great to see it all evolve. 1080p didn't really have a long life span compared to SD, did it - or is it just that time is passing so much quicker, once you get older? ;)

oh and upscaling from 1080p to 4K ... should be comparable to SD upscale for 1080 or is that different in any way? especially live/direct upscaling...

actually both. since it's both about 4x the pixel amount, or did I miscount?

Everybody is now working on 4K camera.

I really don't see 4K in the home taking off for a long, long time (until it is basically a free upgrade from HD, next time someone buys a TV). 1080p is still not even the most used format in most countries... 720P and SD still reign supreme.

The standard home has room for a 40" screen at most, so the benefits of going 1080P to 4K are nowhere close to going SD to 1080P. The manufacturers will try and force it through, and will have some sucess, especially if the sports networks go 4K.... but widespread usage... I don't count on it, 1080P is good enough and the consumer is not ready for such a fast change (from HD to 4K).

hey jim, sounds reasonable.
that's part of what I meant with 1080p didn't have a long lifespan. I can't imagine that the big ones don't wanna milk that for some time,
now that has really started to move into every second home.

did you guys check out the sony video? that annoying ignorance towards REDs existence and achievements... I admit that I admire Jim for his coolness towards that...

Why would they talk about RED?

It was a review of a Sony camera that will cost around $5000 for s35.... RED has nothing to compare it to, so why would they mention it? they don't mention ARRI either... for much the same reason.

I meant the fact that "SONY listens" "60p in such a small package" mingled with the words "for the first time in history" and "unheard of ... with this size and form factor"
of course, they won't talk about RED, why should they, but the choice of words makes me twinge a bit if you know what I mean. It's not that they should mention their competition,
quite a weird thought ;) just not put it as world's first, if it has been done before.

ok, the sensor size is definitely different to scarlets. so, point taken. so the package itself is different and therefore you could call it a world's first.

I think the thing I found most weird is the "SONY listens" part which seems pretty much like a jump on the RED train in the way they handle their relation to the customer.

cheers!

Sony do listen, just not in quite the same way as RED. They have workshops and stuff.... certainly less community input, but they get products to market very fast. RED listens, perhaps too much sometimes, which causes delays.... Both have their pros/cons

The other stuff seems to be true enough... it will very likely be the 1st small form, 60p cine style camera out there

I wouldn't read too much into it.... marketing/hype is what it is... RED do it just as much as the rest!
