I am pleased to announce that the 72hr film competition has an official name, website, rules, start date and is ready to accept contestants! Welcome to the 4K Challenge!

Thanks to Darren Orange of Reactor 88 Studios and all of our sponsors so far, we now have an official website, www.4kchallenge.com. For all those wondering where this came from check out this original thread I opened http://reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?t=21453&highlight=24hr

All of the details you need to know can be accessed in a PDF on the www.4kchallenge.com website via the "RULES" page. This first 4K Challenge is an event for charity "Make a Wish Foundation" and you will be asked to register on our website and donate $1.00 USD or more via PayPal if you wish to officially register you and your team for the prizes. After you donate $1.00 USD or more you and your team are registered to participate in the 4K Challenge!

The First 4K Challenge start date is January 16, 2009 to kick off the New Year! Soon after, the first Challenge end date on Monday 19th there will be an official screening at the downtown independent theatre in Los Angeles http://www.downtownindependent.com/ More details to come on this event.

There will be plenty more 4K Challenges coming in the next few months so if you can't participate this time around but would like to stay informed send us an email that can be found on our contact page and we will log you in our database and send you updates. Any other questions feel free to ask here or via email.

We will be making changes within the next few weeks to the site, information on the challenge etc so stay tuned.

Thanks again to all our sponsors and we hope to see your entries on www.vuze.com and the big screen soon!

Here is the current Prize list so far...

1st Place/Judges Choice Award – Winner gets their choice of Cineform Neo 4K (Mac) or Prospect 4K (Windows)

2nd Place/Viewers Choice Award – Winner will receive a copy of Monkey Extract by Rubber Monkey Software.

3rd Place/Viewers Choice Award – Winner will receive a complimentary entry into the next available OpenCut Competition and complimentary entry fee to participate in the next 4k Challenge.

Again, these may change and or be added to in the near future enabling us to give prizes to more winners…

I'm really looking forward to this. Thank you, Mike for getting this set up! I'm going to start assembling a small team.

I read through everything pretty fast, but did not see a registration deadline? Not that it really matters. If I can get a somewhat committed team together in the next week or so, I'm in.

Glad to hear it Jeff! Good point regarding the deadline. The tentative deadline right now will be Wednesday, January 14th 2009 to register you and your team. Hope you can make it into the competition and the screening!

I am all for it;I things it's a great idea; as Jeff pointed out more details would be great.
Congrats on making it happened!

Albert

Thanks Mike, look forward to it... As long as we're not too busy in January :)

As much as I like time format competitions, perhaps future ones could follow the old DVXUser format of delivering on a theme within a certain time schedule of a couple of months or something... You never know what might crop up on the days (Paying work wise). I also tend to think you get a higher level of quality in the films because of the time spent in post (Usually on sound! :)).

Nevertheless it looks like a solid start so well done.

Hey Paul,
There will be other challenges that will follow other parameters such as a lengthier time period, and other ideas Darren and I have been tossing around. Hopefully you will have the time to enter this current challenge!

Question time...

What specifically happens to a short film, once submitted? I'm wondering if the creators still retain all ownership rights? After the competition ends, I am assuming we would be free to do as we please with our creations.

All rights of the films will be retained by the original creators so as to allow each contestant the option to do what they wish with their film after the 4k Challenge competition it was registered into is complete. This will include the projected screening. In other words, its mandatory for all contestants to keep their film exclusive to the 4k Challenge for the period of that competition through screening. Than you may showcase your film anywhere else you desire. Sorry this was not added in the PDF but it will be shortly.
Thanks Jeff!

UPDATE: 4K Challenge will retain the right to showcase the films submitted on its own website and www.vuze.com in the 4K Challenge Channel coming soon. If for whatever reason you would like your film to be temporarily taken down off of either site ie film festival submission etc, please contact us and we will figure out a solution to your particular scenario. Thanks!

Thank you for the clarification, Mike.

On January 16th, we will be announcing the details
ie log line, props etc here in this thread at 9am PST. All submissions must be uploaded to www.VUZE.com by 9am PST the following Monday January 19th 2009. Your team must be registered to compete.
Thanks!

We do a 48 hour fest up here every year and it's great fun!
It's become an annual event ( 12 years now) and many shorts have gone on to show at numerous festivals around the world.
It's a great way to force some creative juices, and learn to get your shit together.

Of the details to be announced on the 16th, will all elements need to be included or will it be a list where we must pick at least two or three to be used?

Maybe I'm just looking for a heads-up of what to expect. Or specifically, what will the 4K Challenge dictate as requirements? You have said log line and props. I just want to know if location / setting may be specified too, among other things. Or if all of that will be a surprise too... :)

Oh, come on now Jeff, I can't give it all away:-) I can tell you that it is our intention for the props, log line etc to be generic enough so its not inhibiting your creativity or will make your film seem branded in any way. This will keep your film unique in order to be able to use it again in a festival etc.
Whatever we give you to work with will not be a financial burden or force you to shoot somewhere specific. That's the best I can do for ya:detective2:
