I've been going through this point with a friend until now. So the scenario is a shed load of footage requires documenting, scenes transcribed and archived for future use. Looking to be away a while and ship HDD's back to a HQ location where that archivist will make head or tail of the footage. They will also be given the brief to prep clips and push them out to social platforms to promote the project and work to find / secure stock outlets for the footage.

This is one person. My question, what should I realistically look at offering them with regards to a salary for such an appointment? It is envisaged that there will be around 1000 hrs to sift through.

Cheers,
Mark.

If you are looking for someone to do it let me know! :yesnod:

I will volunteer as well! This sounds fun.

I think you'd have to work something out that would involve paying by hour of footage. This would be easiest and should include doing all of the things you listed in one rate.

Cheers guys, we have the individual in mind but have never hired anyone in the past for such a position and don't have a clue as to what would be 'acceptable'. I know from experience that large corporations intern these kinda positions out but as the saying goes, "you only get what you pay for" and seeing as there is an element of PR work involved it would have to be enticing and motivating enough of an offer to have this position generate potential revenue etc.

Cheers,
Mark.

I think this is at least a 2-person job: an assistant editor/logger to take notes on the footage, backup the material, and create database entries for each shot based on timecode; and then an editor/coordinator, who pulls selects and clips and then figures out where and how to post them for promotional use. Trying to dump all this on one person to me would be overwhelming and cheap, in my opinion. 1000 hours' of footage could literally take weeks and weeks and weeks to go through; even if they could do 100 hours a week (which is really pushing it), that's 10 weeks' work, just to log it.

I would advise against paying per hour of footage, as some footage can be fast to process and some footage can consist of many short, complex, keyword-rich shots. If paying by hour, you would essentially give the logger an incentive to work sloppy.

How about a combination of a (lower) rate per hour, $0.0x per keyword, $0.x per shot?

Might be a bit too complicated, too.

Maybe just offer rate per hour worked, which of course would make it harder for you to calculate.

But if you have a person in mind already, why not invite him/her for a coffee and talk the project over, explaining what you need and then you can work out something together...
