  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

4k Anamorphic- what is the pixel rez???

Ana-ratio

Ana-ratio

what is the frame size in pixels for the 4k Ana mode???

Thanks in advance,
Prio

It depends on if you are using the CinemaScope ratio of 2.35:1 or some newer idea of what the ratio should be, like 2.39:1 or 2.40:1.

If you take 2.35:1 then that gives a image are that is half that width, or

2.35/2=1.175x(the sensor height)=pixel width for scope.

if 2.40:1 then

2.40/2=1.200x(the sensor height)=pixel width for scope.

so if the sensor is 16:9 mode at 4k you get a height of,

(9/16)*4096=2304

so

2304x1.175=2707.5

or

2304x1.200=2764.8

I have not seen a screen that is 2.40 around here as far as I know, most of the time the screen is not that wide and some of the image fall on the curtains, so I would not shoot up to the edge with subject matter...

Those sizes get resized in the film recorder,

http://www.celco.com/FormatResolutionTableKodakCineon.asp

As you can see in the cellco tables, your 2708x2304 image area gets resized to 1828x1556.

1828x1556 gives a ratio of 1.174807198:1 or CinemaScope ratio, so you can ask Celco about when 2.40:1 is used (they list it as non-scope format pixel ratios that would not be used to make a scope print with)?

Hopefully someone will chime in with the right answer. Since RED says that the 4K ANA mode is 1.20 : 1 (with a 2X optical squeeze), and if you assume that the recorded height is the same as 4K 16:9 (4096 x 2304), then I'd guess that 4K ANA is 2765 x 2304.

It's 2816 x 2304. It's a bit wider than 1.2:1 because of non-trivial constraints so the little bit extra would need to be cropped off to get to 2.40, 2.39. 2.37 or 2.35:1.

Just to add a little extra...

2816x2304 normalized x2 ends up being about 2.44:1

Film projection is hard matted to 2.40

DCP is 2.39

I've often seen video transfer masters letterboxed to 2.35:1

I've actually created a graph of this that I'll be posting on our nextLAB site soon for those that are interested in seeing how much left/right crop is involved.
