  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

4K Alexa is on its way!

When they talk about bigger then Super35mm they are probably talking about a 1:33 sensor, though with Panavision developing a 70mm camera they could be doing a vistavision sensor which would be pretty neat, would certainly give enough room for Anamorphic lenses.

It will be interesting to see how they tackle uncompressed 4K raw massive data problem. OR will they actually go to compressed RAW route.

Interesting time ahead !

So basically they are copying RED? 4K, higher frame rates, sensor larger then S35mm. Sounds like the EPIC to me, except that shoots 5K.

Wow some threads becomes so idiotic in a split second these days.Tthat you don't want to take a part of them anymore lol

Franz was talking up compression, suggesting that as the resolution gets really high, like with 8K, it becomes more viable to heavily compress it.
Of course we don't know that the focus for Arri will be on RAW, Log-C is very popular on the Alexa, as it pro-res. Perhaps it will even be something like 4K pro-res.

I guess we shall see.

Great they made the step. I hope they will deliver a compressed RAW solution in a smaller form factor (or lighter). Shoulder setup at about 8-10kg fully loaded and I'll have the choice.

Too little to late. As an Alexa owner I have the right to say so.

Well the XR cameras do give onboard recording, so there may be a 4K version of that in the future but OTOH the Alexa HD camera seems focused on Pro Res recording so perhaps that will be the future.

Heres an article about the Alexa XR:

I think the title of this thread is a little misleading. The article states that they were working on a 4K+ sensor, but chose not to release it to market because it would compromise their vision of dynamic range first, everything else second.

Arri is working on a successor to the Alexa (likely high resolution, high dynamic range, etc.) but we don't have any exact details yet.

Name brands like ARRI cost way too much.. for me the only name brand is RED. They invented 4K and the Epic has made its way to major feature films without the extra cost for needed features to make the camera run correctly.

Definitely will be 'a nice camera.
Arri makes beautiful things, we will see their flow and the new specifications.
Arri users will be happy, and finally appreciate the 4k.

Finally... Arri Woke Up... I though they still think "2K is good enough" hahaha...

Might not be a perfect title you are right but if you check the link at the bottom of my article you will find he does say that the new camera will have a minimum of 4K. You are right tho, it might be more than 4K, that doesn't seem to be decided yet. To be honest I would have liked to have written a longer article on this because it's significant news but I'm actually having a really difficult time of things at the moment which I really hope will be over by September! ;)

Finally... Arri Woke Up... I though they still think "2K is good enough" hahaha...

In Arri land, 4K was the only way to go when it came to scanning and digital printing of film. Then they pushed Alexa to the forefront of their camera line and suddenly 2K was good enough and they pooh-pooed 4K. Knew this was coming, there was lots of 4K talk amongst Arri people at NAB this year. So get prepared for the onslaught of 4K advertising and promoting how we will all need 4K, all coming from Arri. You can also expect the large base of "2K is plenty good enough" Arri supporters to be jumping on the 4K bandwagon now.

There's another thread around here discussing a future 4K Alexa... Anyway, I think we all know it's coming, just don't know when... I'm betting we'll see something as soon as IBC, but more than likely it will be at NAB next year.

What does this all mean? It means that we shouldn't have to fight so hard to convince people about 4K anymore. Actually don't have to so much anyway now that RED and Sony, and even Canon, are firmly established with 4K offerings. I'm glad Arri is finally joining the party and I look forward to shooting with their 4K (or whatever) camera and working with footage from it. I'm betting, like the current Alexa, it will actually have a sensor that is larger than the target format. I'm expecting it to actually have 4.8K~5K + here.
