  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

This might be a stupid question but I would rather ask than fail :)

Shot 4K DCI (4096x2160) with the intent of using 2:35:1 as final output.

Blanked the project in Resolve (2:35:1) and rendered a 4096x2160 file.

Using Premiere Pro set to 4096x2160 I am now seeing this odd black vertical bar on both sides (see attached).

Someone please tell me if I'm doing this right?

I will be supplying a 4K DCI to the DCP vendor and will be targeting 2K.

Anyone want to chime in on any possible issues I will have?

Thanks!

Update:

I dragged and dropped the clip rendered from Resolve into Sequence icon in Project window and still got the same result (vertical bars).

I will check later if its an option I might have overlooked in Resolve during delivery.

What does media info (sourceforge) say the pixel size is?

4096x2160.

I am curious of Im doing this right with the 2:35:1 setup.

Should I be using blanking?

On BMD Forum it was suggested I do a 4K Scope 2,39:1 and remove blanking.

The vertical bars must have been caused by my render from Resolve.

Going to render with 4K Scope 2,39:1 and use Centre Crop with no resizing.

It seems to do the trick.

Now I hope thats complain with DCP.

I ran into this the some years ago when I first started using Resolve for processing Sony's raw dng footage from the FS700 + Odyssey7Q. I can't remember off the top of my head but it's a preference setting box you tick when setting up a project. I'll find it tomorrow morning. Quite sure it's the same issue.

Oh wait, Thats the one. You've already found it. It's one of those preferences with 'center crop' and 'resizing'. You just need to choose the correct setting there.

Thanks Kris good to hear from a fellow RU for any support :)

Now to hear back from DCP service if they can accept that size.

if you are going with 2.39:1 the correct aspect ratio for DCP is 2048 x 858 for 2k , 4096 x 1716 for 4k , no need for blanking as most theaters already have masking to change the screen aspect ratio

only valid DCP resolutions are

1920 x 1080
2048 x 1080
4096 x 2160 (although for 1.85 only 3996 is used)
2048 x 858
4096 x 1716

any other custom resolution would require black bars within the legal resolutions above

Thanks Bing!

WTF someone at BMD Forum told me that 4096x1716 is not DCP legal and that 4096x1714 is.

I already created the so called legal one :P

Back to the drawing board :)

Yeah looks like someone got some digits wrong on the BMD Forum.

EDIT: Just thinking about the above, I think probably what someone has done is calculate 2.39 @4K which actually does work out to 4096x1714 (4096/2.39=1713.8). However, the DCP spec for scope is actually 4096x1716 as previously mentioned. I'm sure there is a reason for the DCP spec actually being slightly off 2.39 but I have no idea what that reason is. If I was to guess, it might be to do with JPEG-2000 wavelet based encoding and having integers that are easily divisible for lower resolution previews - but that's really just a stab in the dark.

If it helps for the future, I've created a cheat sheet to assist with this kind of stuff and it includes the legal DCP sizes: http://unravel.com.au/files/Unravel_Resolution_CheatSheet.pdf

Feel free to shoot me a PM or email if you get stuck Eric :)

Crossing fingers :)
