  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Here's an interesting one.

I need to transcode 4hrs of 4K, (and 3K) 29.97 Redcode files to 2K 25p prores files. Any ideas?

I have a Scratch at my disposal over the weekend for some tests, and a Apple FCP suite on Monday morning also for some tests.

29.97 to 25fps is a bitch at the best of times.

The only way I've found to do anything like a decent transfer between the two is to use an Alchemist, which is not cheap for volume work. I also don't know if they support 2K - you can certainly do 1080p, but that might not help you? Presumably, if you're finishing 25p your going to broadcast, no? So a final project size of 1080p? Or are you doing something else with the footage?

As a thought, if I were posting a show shot 29.97 for 25fps output (at HD or SD res), I would most likely work in the native framerate and then convert the final edit via an Alchemist. That way, you keep your conversion costs to a minimum...

Obviously, if that's not your intended output, it may not be a suitable workflow for your needs - can you give us any more info on the project and it's intended destination?

Cheers,
Dom.

Compressor can do it, but terribly sloooooow…
