Does anybody have a good workflow for a moderate to low budget film we are shooting this year for the following goals...

We would like to have a final 35mm film print at 2.35 ratio.

What camera settings would best suit this need? 4K 2:1, 4K 16:9?

What about post? We will edit in FCP.

And transcoding?

We've been toying around with some setups and there seems to be so many choices. Can anyone weigh in on this?

Thanks a bunch.

Currently shooting 4k 2:1 24p for a feature with filmout at 2.35. Some racking option before the crop though not as much as 4k 16:9 (but hey we have good operators!). Also means higher framrate options in redcode 36.

Route:

Process dailies to SD Prores 1024x576 through red rushes. Approx realtime render on 8 core at quarter res.
Sync second system audio (Cameras jammed with lockit boxes)
Offline in FCP
Crimson DPX conform (broken into manageable reels)
DPX grade in baselight etc
Film out scanning magic in a special expensive place.

Did you have any trouble with TC Sync on lockit? In march I did some tests wich gave us bad results... it still isn't clear if it was due to a bad Lemo wire or due to the redone TC input...

Thanks

Sounds good. Thanks!

Yep that's the one.

Only problem is that the Red drops sync when powered down - every battery change requires a quick jam (We have one box for 2 cameras) just stick the lemo in with the camera in jam sync mode, check the display and voila.

Interestingly out first sync test showed the red display one frame behind that of the sound equipment but when synced in post it was spot on - presumably just a lag in the display processing

Other than that no problems at all.

Did a long feature film with lockit boxes always on the cams and no problems. It seems that the snyced TC is showing up on the red lcd when you hit the first time the record button after every shut down and lockit connected....

A little question about the lockit timecode generator. Do you need 2 lockit box: one box on the Red and another one on the audio recorder or you just need one that you feed a TC from the audio recorder and after that you let it on the Red ?

thanks

when this year? if you're shooting in december, build 17 should be out and tested enough by then. it should include 2.35:1 which will match your target aspect ratio and might even give you faster frame rates than 2:1. only downside is the lookaround is lost on the sides. at least that's the rumor around these parts.

One on each camera which will be synced from the audio recorder would say two times a day. It depends on the audio recorder how stable it is. The lockit boxes hold timecode at least with a maximum of 1 frame drift in 24 hours. take care of the batteries in the lockits. when you switch on the lockit, the red led lights. when you feed a correct tc signal the green leds lights for about 2 seconds and the red goes off. when its proper synced the green led flashes every second and you can pull out the feed from the audio device and connect it to the cam. if it is faster flashing green, then its time to change the battery lately.

If you shoot 4k 2:1 framed 2,35:1 dont forget to export your dpx anamorphic to get the maximum of signal....

Unfortunately that will be right in the middle of our shoot. We plan on mid November as is now. Who knows though, maybe they can rush it out.

I believe that 2.35:1 in camera will not be part of build 17, but the next one after that, based on Jim and others' posts.
