Hi All,

I am a field DIT and Post consultant, and I have an upcoming Red project for a client. I wanted to know if 4K 16:9, and honestly any of the 16:9 resolutions are currently supported for Post integration with FCP, Avid, any NLEs and VFX/Compositing programs like After Effects, Combustion, etc. I know as of my last project that only the 2:1 resolutions were supported.

Any and all info is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

16:9 is universally supported now. Before build 14 or 15 or so, 4K 16:9 support was incomplete. 16:9 has always been available in 2K and we were given 4K 16:9 support before we were given 3K.

The biggest format limitation at the moment for many people here is that FCP does not support 3K RED footage. If you shoot 3K and want to use Final Cut, you must transcode the 3K first to some other format, even if you keep the 3K resolution. For online editing within Final Cut and using L&T to "wrap" the R3D for native use, it leaves 2K as 2K, doesn't support 3K and brings in 4K as 2K.

If you shoot 3K, can't you edit in FCP with proxies, without transcoding, the same way like 4K?

I think you can edit with the H proxies (1.5K), but you wouldn't be able to online at 3K resolution in FCP. But then again, I can't speak from experience. I haven't encountered a RED production yet that shot at 3K.

Yes, you can use the proxies to edit 3K, I was just saying that native R3D support in FCP currently doesn't support 3K and it converts all 4K to 2K.

3 K is used as 1.5 K.
