We just received our EVF... Wow! It's everything I hoped for and more. I too would like to have the option of turning off everything except the frame lines and tally light, but that's certainly no deal-breaker.

Fully loaded the Red is not a light-weight; it tips the scales at 49.25 lbs (22.34 kilo) with Cooke 18-100 zoom, MB 14, Arri FF4 with one wheel, Red Drive, AB battery, LCD and EVF. When View Factor gets around to actually delivering the zoom motor, it will probably hit 50.

We could probably shave off a few ounces by switching to 18" rods in CF, but it's still a beast to mount/dismount and lug around. Not a problem for 35MM guys, but many video shooters are in for a shock.

I did try hand-holding with Zeiss primes; very practical, especially shooting to CF cards. Obviously not designed for shooting on the shoulder, but serviceable. It would take a very robust operator to shoot this way all day.

Ergonomically, I still think the controls should not be in the back of the camera and I'm working on a mod for protecting some of the buttons with cover plates. I have hit them accidentally a few times.

Over all, the camera is amazing and I've yet to have a shooting problem other than an occasional requirement to hit the boot switch a second time and some dropped frames shooting a very loud lightning effect with the Red Drive. No dreaded codec errors so far.

Good shooting!

I think some help is on the way for handheld. ET phone home.

Leo, do you use the RED cheese plates? or are those in the picture just the ARRI? Our camera is to be shipped in september, hopefully, and I have an ARRI matte box that I wish I could use on the red.
Any feedback would be very much appreciated.! Thanks.

I should have mentioned that we are all Element Technica accessories on 15MM rods. ET/Red base plate and their "Topside Combo," top cheese plate and two top rod mounts.

I've got the Red Cradle mounted to the rear top rod mount, not on separate rail mount. This required us to cut down the handle extension.

Good shooting!

Well your lens is a 12 lbs monster!
The AB isn't helping either.

Just throwing some light weight thoughts around:

Put a 3 - 4 lbs Cooke S4 on there.
Swap to CF cards.
But the battery on the battery belt.
Use a light weight clip on matte box.
Throw light weight, et or RED cf 12"rods off the front for hand held or wait for the ET solution.

Take all the top side stuff off except the front ear and the handle.

You can have the weight on your shoulder under 20lbs quick.

Agreed - Fully loaded, it's a beast. And CF cards aren't an option for full res 30 fps. I'm using them and the battery belt clip for crane shots, but not for all day.

I agree heartily with the rear control issue. Maybe I'm just used to side controls, but it seems much more practical. For the Epic, why not put the controls on the operators side, and use the rear space for an integrated, (and therefore lighter and less cumbersome) drive and battery mount? The rear drive and battery cables are annoying and vulnerable (my battery plate failed there). The camera would balance better as well.

Leo, wondering if anything you have shot with the Red has aired in Alabama yet?

Mark,
I don't think he was trying to handhold with the 50-lb. combo. ;)
And any experienced AC will have no problem humping that around all day.
Cheers,
Harry
