Hi all,

as there's been lots of talk about the use of 48fps for 3D, I decided to shoot a simple test. Here you go:

48fps_test_SbS-full.avi (28 MB)

Shot on RED One (M) using a $150 plastic lens, so lower your expectations wrt image quality. It's in Side-by-Side Full, i.e. frame size is 3840x1080, and so far I've only managed to view it on a combo of Stereoscopic Player for Windows (www.3dtv.at), Nvidia 3D Vision kit and a 120Hz 3D PC monitor.

NOTE: There's way way way too much horizontal parallax. Use Shift and Left arrow to decrease parallax when viewing on the Stereoscopic Player until it looks bearable to your eyes.

edit: File replaced with a lighter (lower bitrate) version which plays a lot smoother.

180 degree shutter? Looks nice at 48fps, but staccato when dropping every other frame to make it 24fps.

Free-viewing gives a pretty decent 3D effect without having to worry about the horizontal offset, once you crop the frames to be of equal size for each eye.

I for one look forward to seeing what Peter Jackson et al do with the increased frame rate.

Did you try 270 shutter?
Unfortunately no. I'm not really a fan of slow shutter, and went the opposite direction for these tests. I checked just now, and the clip I posted was shot with 45 degree shutter.

I replaced the file in the first post with a new encode. This one runs a lot smoother on my PC.
