  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

#416 - "Steve" is comfy here in Louisville, KY

Thanks for the advice Brennan! Keep it coming!

Thanks y'all! Let me reiterate that this camera is blowing my effin mind here.

The 7D was cute when I got it. It was like "Oh that's cute, you can make little 'films' - aren't you special." This camera is like, game over. Time to do something real.

I love the enthusiasm in your posts man! its very refreshing to see this. I'm still patiently waiting and its hard to see people only talking about the problems they are running into....when I know it is only 1% of the scarlet owners. Most people are out shooting and loving what they are seeing. Just getting so pumped as the SO numbers get closer and closer to mine!

Shot a simple lil sunset with Steve.

I did some HDRx stuff, but can't seem to make the stuff look worth a crap in RedCineX. I don't know if I'm doing something wrong. It just looks kinda lame. Any suggestions? I edit with Vegas Pro 11 and it seems like they don't have a way to work with HDRx stuff, so I don't know how to output from RedCineX to get something I could edit with yet. But I also haven't spent more than an hour messing with it total.

I got ol "Steve" out here in Ecuador right now. Pics soon to follow! I...love...this...effin...camera!!!

I haven't even had a chance to color correct any of these, but WOW....

Right now I'm in Manta chillin in the Hotel before we got out and shoot some more stuff. I'm shooting a documentary for a non-profit out of Louisville called Supplies Over Seas. They collect and send medical supplies from hospitals around our area to developing areas.

I had such an amazing time running around Ecuador with the Scarlet. Every night I would go back and download the footage, I would constantly be wowed by the results! The dynamic range and the richness of each picture makes me feel like I made the right decision forking over all that cash to Red.

I was filming a documentary for an organization based out of Louisville called Supplies Over Seas. They find perfectly good medical supplies from hospitals around the area which are about to be thrown away and send them to countries in need. There was also a medical mission team called Healing The Children which was made up of about 15 doctors who used a lot of SOS's materials during surgeries. I was lucky enough to be documenting this whole thing with the Scarlet!

The whole trip, the Scarlet performed almost perfectly. ALMOST. There were a couple of bugs that I noticed while running around with it for about 12-15 hours per day.

-Little digital multicolored boxes will sometimes show up on clips. I don't know what caused them, but out of my 1000 or so clips from the whole project, there may be like 3 or 4 with these weird digital color dropouts that cause my Premiere CS5.5 to lock up. I'll post pictures when I find a shot with it.

-The very last night of the project I was filming the closing party when the weirdest, most bothersome thing happened. I have a 3D mic that I've been using in conjunction with the Scarlet to capture some sweet ambiance from wherever I'm shooting. (Here's a pic of the mic.)

Anyway, it outputs two 1/8th inch lines and I take them straight into the front of the camera. Well the final night, whenever I would boot up the Scarlet with the audio plugged in and the mic turned on, the touch screen wouldn't work AT ALL! I was in panic mode because I needed to film something quickly. I rebooted, same thing. I took out the battery, put it back in, then rebooted....SAME THING. Then I unplugged the mic and rebooted and the screen worked again. WTF!? That hasn't happened since then, but I've also only tried it once.

And one more thing that is SUUUUPER IRRITATING. Whoever designed the battery grip thing in the side handle sucks. 9/10 times it will NOT hold the battery in place so that I can close the side handle. What the hell? Did I get a crappy side handle with a bad grip? I have to shove a battery in and basically smash my finger as I try to whip the side handle closed before the redvolt shoots out. Not fun at all, and it usually takes me like 4 or 5 times to get it closed. Very frustrating.

But all that aside, what an amazing trip! I love the Scarlet despite the little problems.

EDIT!

First off amazing pictures all around, kudos to your eye and grading. I heard about this organization and I think they're doing great work so I'm glad you can do them justice with your Scarlet.

I loved that you were using the 18-135mm canon kit lens! I love it! Thanks for posting this and using that bit of glass. I'm a big fan of these old school kit lenses for run and gun stuff and they're of decent quality. Of course anything larger than a 60inch screen and you start seeing some CA and other artifacts but for most people who don't have a trained eye (or if we can be honest, once you see cinema quality glass or even a decent piece of still glass) it's hard to see the difference.

My 1 question, does the IS work?

and finally RIP Steve

No, actually this was shot with much better lenses. Mostly L-Series plus the Tokina 11-16. I love the crap in my arsenal. I got a nice portable cinebag that is super heavy, but I drug that thing everywhere and could move as quickly as anyone running around shooting 4K stuff on the fly. I have used the Red One before and got super stressed out because of how big it was and how hard it was to get creative on the fly with it. This Scarlet's mobility is so sweet.

And YES, the IS does work on the 18-135. Quite well actually. It's a great lens for using on the fly if you don't need to rack focus. When you focus it, it looks SUPER CHEAP. So yeah! I can't complain about how it looks when everything's in focus that's for sure.

Steve will live on! One day we'll do the movie that he inspired. Until then, he'll live on in Scarlet form.

This is off topic from my Ecuador trip, but last night I filmed some snow lightening! What the hell!!!!! I've never seen that before. Just wish I had a wider lens on there to show how everything lit up in neon blue!

How is the 3d mic working? I really like what you can achieve with it, but is it picking up too much noise from the camera?

I love it so far! Right now, I've got my fan completely off during recording. Unless I've been filming for more than 10 minutes straight, it won't come on. But yeah, when the camera does flip on, you can definitely hear the fan which is super loud.
